Just a little thing I did with a sampled piano mixed with sculpture and a bell sound, then arpeggiated, the bass sweep it's a simple distorted Serum ran thru a delay.
It's nothing crazy, but kind of a relaxing track, so I figured some people would enjoy it during sexy times or while having a bath or some yoga, or while sitting on the couch scratching their genitals.

The early 1990s was a very creative time for alternative music. The Cocteau Twins had changed labels from 4AD to Capitol Records and were touring medium sized halls. Radiohead came on the scene with the single “Creep” from their first album. “Loveless” by My Bloody Valentine was blasting from car stereos and influencing bands in college towns everywhere. There were few signs of the grunge era to come. It was in this environment that Orange came to be.

Originally from New Zealand, Sonya Waters lived in London when she received an invitation to record an album for Strange Weekend Records in San Francisco. The project did not come to fruition but she fell in love with the city and decided to stay. After an initial lineup of musicians fell apart, Sonya put an ad in a local paper and met Michael Papenburg. From the first time they played together, it was clear that they had something magical. Sonya moved from keyboards to guitar and sang in a language inspired by books on myths, extinct animals, ancient civilizations, Goddess worship, botany, and pure melody. Michael experimented with effects and alternate tunings in order to create floating walls of sound with his guitar. Together, they would improvise on song ideas for hours with a goal of creating beautiful music that was free of traditional pop confinements.

Michael Papenburg, a Bay Area native, lived in Berkeley at the time. Initially drawn to the sounds of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, he found true inspiration in bands such as The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cocteau Twins, and Dead Can Dance. In the late 80s, he enjoyed regional success as lead guitarist for the band Missile Harmony featuring Kurt Herr from Wire Train on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. At the time of Sonya’s ad, Missile Harmony had dissolved and Michael was searching for a true kindred spirit. He found one in Sonya.

The initial lineup of the band came together fairly quickly. Katherine Cole joined the group on bass and background vocals. They played a few house concerts as a trio and then added Mike Burns on drums. The band became a staple of the SF music scene, opening for bands such as The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Mazzy Star, Lush, and Tarnation. When performing live, Orange hung large canvas banners around the stage against which beautiful images were projected directly onto the band. By combining stunning imagery with ethereal and haunting music, the band set itself apart from most bands in the scene.

Soon after its inception, Orange began recording with Bart Thurber who ran the House of Faith recording studio in Palo Alto. House of Faith ironically specialized in recording punk bands but Bart was a very talented engineer and did an excellent job of capturing the Orange sound. During this time, Anton Newcome from The Brian Jonestown Massacre invited the band to include a few songs in a box set released on Bomp records. The recordings eventually found their way to Dewdrops Records in Los Angeles who signed the band and released their self-titled album. Orange would eventually record a cover of the Pixies song “Gigantic” for the compilation CD Thurteen on the same label.

Over the three years it was together, Orange went through a number of lineup changes. Heidi Vincent, Tim Ong and Topper all played bass for the band at different times as well as Steve Watkins on drums. As would be expected, different members brought their influences to the group but Sonya and Michael remained at the core of the band’s musical direction. These lineup changes brought about numerous setbacks, though, and the eventual demise of the band.

Every band that ever exists is a magical creature of sorts. Equal parts energy, vision, hubris, beauty, integrity, and vulnerability. To have experienced an Orange performance was to be engulfed in sound, light, and pure emotion. Their CD captures much of that. It is an echo from another time.

The material collated on this third release from Heavenly Music Corporation was composed specifically for St. Giga in Japan, a satellite broadcast radio station transmitting ethereal audio harmony 24 hours a day. What made this station otherworldly was its programming; motivated by tidal movements, the aquatic ebbs and flows of each day synchronised to the activity and intensity of the music broadcast.

Following the release of ‘No Further Ahead Than Today’ last November Ulrich Schnauss (now a member of Tangerine Dream) wastes little time in bringing us the long awaited sequel to his 2011 eponymous collaboration with Jonas Munk.

There's a prismatic, multi-dimensional quality to these 11 tracks, most likely stemming from the fact that these two producers have each worked with a wide range of styles and musicians throughout their 15+ year careers: Ulrich cut his teeth as a drum and bass producer in Berlin, before releasing a string of highly influential neo-shoegaze records on labels such as Domino and City Centre Offices. Since moving to London in 2006 he's been a member of the bands Engineers and Longview, remixed many artists (from Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys to Mojave 3) and since 2013, been a member of legendary band Tangerine Dream.

While Jonas initially became known to the electronica community via his Manual albums on Morr Music and Darla Records, he also has a career as a noted producer on the European psych scene, as well as working on film soundtracks and experimental minimalism.

Fans of the first album’s euphoric and blissful moments will find much to love here, but also themes that gradually unfurl into crisp, symphonic soundscapes. The album is perfectly titled - it certainly has the feel of a journey but not in a literal sense. It feels like an ‘emotional passage’ or one that plays out via a series of dreams.

Opener ‘Amaris’ has many of the Schnauss hallmarks that we’ve come to enjoy from his many shoegaze collaborations and Munk is the perfect foil for this side to his oeuvre - the track chimes and sways beautifully before one of his trademark melodies hits and leaves you breathless. Munk introduces a more progressive aspect to the release than previously heard by the pair on 'genau wie damals', which recalls several 70’s guitar based giants, though in 2016 this is somehow a natural diversion for a record bearing Ulrich’s name.
Mst’ is certainly one for those yearning for the open armed rush of the first album will surely embrace - 80’s guitars and electro drums set the scene for some of the most gorgeous sequencing and melodic synth work on the album. In truth though, there’s no shortage of highlights. The retro futurism of ‘Spellbreaker’ is awesomely addictive and modest standout ‘Caffeine blues’ combines tasteful guitar strokes with a standard of Berlin school sequencing that surely only a member of one of the scene’s key exponents could summon.

Billow Observatory – the trans-atlantic duo consisting of Detroit's Jason Kolb (Auburn Lull) and Danish producer Jonas Munk (Manual) – are back with a follow-up to the their debut album from 2012. 

”II: Plains/Patterns” departs from the first LP’s amorphous ambient haze with a more rigid, albeit subtle, underpinning of rhythm and pulse. The duo’s obsession with “place and space” comes clearly into focus with an album that draws deeply from Munk and Kolb’s individual proximity to the geographically distant, but oddly similar, sounds of Germany and Michigan, past and present. 

 Traces of shoegaze, modern minimal electronica, and kosmische appear on every track, but are mutated into something mysterious and new. ”Pulsus”, for example, opens the album with a driving teutonic stutter and washes of serene guitar loops that are punctuated by bursts of filtered synth patterns; a combination that seamlessly bridges the gaps between disparate genres and periods of time. 

 Centerpiece, ”Plains”, expands the ambient formula into an inspired epic in three parts, where swells of processed guitars, distant voices and faint echoes of Detroit techno are weaved together to form a kaleidoscopic whole. And tracks such as ”Vex” and ”Plum” seem to pay as much homage to Slowdive and Eno's Harold Budd collaborations as to the modern minimalism from Cologne or Berlin.

Seit 2008 veröffentlicht der Mitbegründer des Kölner Musik Labels Ki kontinuierlich elektronische Musik. Dass er gerne zu künstlerischen Kollaborationen bereit ist, stellte er zuletzt 2011 auf der Ki-Spilt No.2 Baltic Sea gemeinsam mit Steffen Kirchhoff unter Beweis. Dort tauchten zum ersten Mal Vocals in Löfflers musikalischem Schaffen auf. Einmal auf den Geschmack gekommen, hat Löffler sich bei A Forest für gleich drei Tracks stimmliche Unterstützung geholt: Die gebürtige Dänin Gry Noehr Bagøien begleitet ihn bei Feelharmonia mit endlos gelooptem, gepitchtem sphärischem Summen, aus dem sich erst allmählich ganz artikulierte Wörter formen. Mohna, Frontfrau der Hamburger Band Me Succeeds unterstützt Christian Löffler bei Eleven. Auch Poet Marcus Roloff hat am Album mitgewirkt, seine mal implizit, mal explizit bedrohlich düsteren Texte fügen sich perfekt in die Löfflersche Klangwelt ein.

Für die dreimonatige Arbeit an seiner ersten LP, zog sich Christian Löffler in ein kleines Haus einer ehemaligen Gartenkolonie bei Usedom zurück. Dort gab es nur einen Raum, ein Fenster und einen Ausblick: Wald. Bei seinen Touren durch die karge Nachbarschaft hin zum Meer sammelte er die Geräusche ein, die ihn umgaben: Blätterknistern, Brandungsrauschen – mal beruhigend, mal bedrohlich, so wie Natur eben ist. Hohlige Holzsounds ziehen sich als mal leises, mal lauteres Geklöppel durch viele Tracks der Platte.
