Signs Of Life

The Ancient Ones is a thematic and textural ambient work composed and produced in 2013 employing a hypnotic and meditative blend of custom sound-design, mirco-tonality, spectral constructs, image-based compositions, code generated synthesis, procedural mathematics, granular synthesis, analog synthesis, minimal acoustic piano, and lots of reverb and spatialization from 2CAudio B2 and Aether . The Ancient Ones imagines a time long before humanity as it exists now and vividly paints a mesmerising aural landscape of this fantastical vision.

A collaboratively edited version of Wayfarer's The Ancient Ones is being used for the 2014 feature film Mandorla directed by the incredible Roberto Miller. The primary composer and music director for the project is American ambient music legend Robert Rich. The film also features music by Michael Stearns, AES Dana and other ambient music leaders. It's truly an honor for Wayfarer to be included in this project, as many of these pioneers were early influences on Andrew's work and interest in electronic music.

Wayfarer is a project name Andrew Souter uses for the deepest of deep ambient space music. This is music that is meant to invoke a sense of traveling without moving to remote and unknowable reaches of outer and inner space. Wayfarer projects are more sound environments than music in the traditional sense. They are intended to invoke a sense of ineffable awe at the magnificence of the universe, and give a fleeting sense of connection to some form of universal non-human intelligence. Despite, or rather perhaps because of, its humble abstract nature, this is meditative music that implicitly asks big questions, and hopefully inspires big ideas.

"Whitespace" is the first of the Wayfarer series. This two hour sonic odyssey is a collection of thematic and textural ambient deep cruisers that are certain to be the impetus of a myriad forms of outward journeys and inward discoveries. The atmospheric, mood-inducing soundscapes of Whitespace make a perfect compliment to mediation, relaxation, deep concentration, lucid dreaming, quiet introspection, various spiritual practices, star gazing, and various other formative life experiences. To borrow words from Stephen Hill, founder of Hearts Of Space, this is "slow music for fast times".

Flashing Lights

A little ambient piece I wrote yesterday afternoon.. Sorry not to have so much time for composing music until July, but I really wanted to share something with you in a little free time from my studying.

I always thought of ambient music as a way to effectively depict soundscapes with notes and musical colors (frequencies, tones, silences).

I’ll listen to this with closed eyes and I’ll see sounds painting a landscape in the imaginary space. Like emerging from the deepness of your thoughts, and sorrounding you with its presence, because it's you who has been creating it. Music conceals places in its notes.

I called that place "The wastelands", a distant landscape brought back to our time for a little moment, as it were while the wind blew in the cloudy sky and the sun set over the horizon of the open fields.

Just like a dream, at the end you open your eyes and there's no trace left, if not a subtle sensation of having been there, somewhere, sometime...

Searching For Bill is the debut film by Danish director Jonas Poher Rasmussen. The film delves into the meaning of life for those living on the edge of modern American society by taking a documental trip through America where reality and fiction sway in a sensual pas de deux down mythological highways. It is a tantalizing and impressionistic depiction of America and Americans as seen with a northern European sensibility. From the overgrown and tattered streets of Detroit through to the off-the-grid desert settlement of Slab City in the Colorado Desert, the film's journey through the underbelly of America allows a fascinating glimpse into the lives of America's have-nots. It's a subtle and sensitive film, as much about hope and beauty as it is about decay.

 With his experience in ambient music (as Manual, Billow observatory) as well as being a seasoned producer of psychedelic rock and folk-rock (Causa Sui, Sun River and others) Danish producer Jonas Munk was an obvious choice for the composing the soundtrack, and he sets the perfect backdrop for this journey through America by blending analog synthesizer drones with twangy guitars and his signature atmosphere. These 13 tracks can best be described as "Ambient Americana". Heavily inspired by the American rural ambient music from the last two decades (think Labradford, Windy & Carl, Landing and Auburn Lull) as well as motoric krautrock and more traditional folk-rock sounds, this album feels like a journey through cities and shifting landscapes. It channels the beauty and wonder of America as seen through the eyes of a Dane but like the film itself it has strong undercurrents of darkness.
