I sang the lead vocals for this track, written by Noah Silver (produced by Noah & Mike O.), for a scene in the Showtime series “Masters of Sex”. Even though they ultimately used 0.3 seconds of this track 😅, it was still an honor to be asked to do it.

You Got That Thing

Pleading is for those unseen. For those of us, for all of you, who due to something out of their control - the nation they were born in, the body they live in, their sex, their gender, their identity, their class, their family, their skin - have found in life that the acknowledgment of their humanity and the protection of their basic safety and rights is seen as political, divisive, and ultimately, optional. This is for those of you who know the loneliness of living in a world where the society's default is your humanity going unseen, while others are preserved at all costs, especially when that cost is you. Whether it be a global level, a systematic and oppressive level, a local level, or an individualistic level, I see you. I know that hollow space within when your pain is constantly trivialized by those who cut you because they can't feel you bleeding. Of being brutally silenced while the world keeps turning, keeps laughing, keeps living.   It is because you are powerful, not because you are powerless, that they seeked to destroy you, to dehumanize you, to delegitimize you.  I see you.  This is for you, for those of you whose struggles I know, and those of you who have been silenced to the point that I may not even know of your pain. This is for you. This is for me. This is for us,  May we find each other, May we see each other, may we value each other. And may we one day come together with all our differences so we are all  protected, valued, and seen. May none of us get left behind, and may we rise together.

It’s rare that I publicly pay tribute to artists in this way, but D’Angelo was one of my vocal heroes when I was growing up. If you’ve followed me for a while online or taken lessons with me, then you’ve heard me demonstrate parts of his songs—especially this one—countless times. 

While I have many musical influences, it was D’Angelo (a fellow baritone 😌) who taught me how to find and utilize “twang” in my upper register. I sang his parts from “Nothing Even Matters” with my friends during my lunch breaks in high school. I auditioned for gigs with “Brown Sugar” and “Lady”. When the video for “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” dropped, the media talked almost exclusively about how great he looked; but I actually LOVED THE SONG 🙌🏽😭. His phrasing and use of various tonal textures and colors was inspiring to me. 

I’d always hoped that I would one day have the chance to meet him and tell him all this face to face. I’m sure countless artists feel the same way. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. His place among the pantheon of legendary musicians and soul singers is locked in, but his earthly presence will certainly be missed 🙏🏽🥹
