Red Eye - Wallies

I was tapped to provide music for the opening night of Esteban Cabeza De Baca’s “Alma” opening night at Garth Greenan Gallery in NYC. Based on both Esteban’s art and the similarities we share in our backgrounds I built a mix planted in Cumbia that speaks largely to the shared experiences of Latin American immigrants, but is interwoven with sounds from distant countries as a reminder of how connected we can be by our dreams, aspirations and struggles. There are a few tracks by indigenous creators and with indigenous sounds, as a reminder not just of where so much of our strength is rooted, but the people themselves who remain marginalized, persecuted and erased.

Paying homage to The Loft and its founder David Mancuso as the one seminal New York City party that started so many of us on a lifelong love affair with music and making friends while dancing. This mix is giving context to how incredibly strong and vibrant its cultural influence remains to this day by providing examples of now-classic tracks that were made popular at 99 Prince Street during those weekly parties.
