春のやわらかな日差しが差し込む教室。ユイとさくらは机を並べて座りながら、今日のテストの準備に取り組んでいた。去年から続く「ペアテスト」にもすっかり慣れた2人だが、今日は新しい形式のテストが導入されると聞いて、少し緊張していた。
担任のハルナ先生が前に立ち、にっこりと微笑む。
「今日は特別な『記憶の地図』テストを行います。ペアで協力しながら、記憶力と考える力を両方使って問題を解いてください。」
教室にざわざわとした興奮が広がった。

ハルナ先生が説明を始めた。
「このテストでは、まず2人で大きな紙に『記憶の地図』を描いてもらいます。この地図には、今まで習った内容を思い出して書き込むことができます。例えば、算数の公式や国語で覚えた言葉、理科の実験で使った道具など、何でもOKです。」
「でも、ただ書くだけじゃないんですよね？」とダイスケが手を挙げて聞いた。
「そう！次のステップで、この地図を使って問題を解く時間が来ます。だから、思い出せることをたくさん書いておくのがポイントです。」

「じゃあ、始めましょう！」先生の合図で、2人1組のペアたちが一斉に紙に向かった。
ユイとさくらは相談しながら、地図に色々な記憶を書き込んでいった。「算数の九九をここに書こう！」
「いいね、国語の漢字もここにまとめておく？」
2人で工夫を凝らしながら、紙の上には色とりどりの線や言葉が広がっていった。
一方、ダイスケとタイチは、大きな丸の中に「理科の実験道具リスト」を書いていた。
「これがあれば理科の問題は完璧だ！」とタイチが胸を張る。

地図作りが終わると、先生がテスト問題を配り始めた。
「問題の答えを探すときは、自分たちの地図を参考にしてもいいですよ。ただし、地図に書いていない内容が出てきたら、自分たちの記憶と考える力を使って答えを出してくださいね。」
ユイとさくらは、早速最初の問題に取り組んだ。「35×2はいくつ？」「九九の場所、ここだよ！」ユイが地図を指さす。
「…70だ！」とさくらが自信を持って答えを書き込む。
次の問題は国語の漢字の読みだった。「これは地図に書いてない！」さくらが困ったように言う。
「でも、確か教科書でこの漢字を見たよ。『空気』って読むんじゃない？」ユイが思い出しながら答えると、さくらも納得して頷いた。

ダイスケとタイチのペアは理科の問題に挑んでいた。「光合成に必要なものを3つ挙げなさい。」「地図には水と二酸化炭素しか書いてないけど…」ダイスケが言う。
「あと1つ、なんだっけ？」タイチが考え込む。
「光だよ！」とダイスケが思い出し、2人は声を揃えて答えを書いた。

テスト終了後、子どもたちは地図と回答用紙を持って集まり、感想を話し合った。「地図を作るのが楽しかった！」
「書いてないことを思い出すのが難しかったけど、2人で考えたらできたね。」
ハルナ先生は微笑みながら言った。
「今日のテストは、みんなが暗記したことを確認するだけでなく、自分たちの記憶を整理し、必要なときに引き出す力を育てるためのものです。そして、2人で協力することで、1人では思い出せなかったことも見つけられたでしょ？」
子どもたちは頷き、次のペアテストが楽しみだと笑顔を見せた。

ユイとさくらは帰り道で話していた。「テストって、覚えるだけじゃなくて、考えるのも大事なんだね。」
「そうだね。しかも、2人だともっといろんなことができる気がする。」
夕陽に照らされた2人の背中は、これからも協力しながら成長していく未来を示しているようだった。
