She hummed a song from a long-lost year
Played it backwards so no one could hear
I kept her heartbeat in a cassette shell
Now it’s warbling soft like a carousel

We were poems with broken rhymes
Falling forward through old times
Now the mirror won’t reflect
What my memory can’t protect
