Vertical Runners

The 1970s Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia forever changed the country and its people, many of whom were forced to flee around the world. With a death toll estimated to range from one fourth to one third of the Cambodian population, survivors face varied forms of trauma and PTSD, but those effects are passed on to the children of those survivors in many forms. As second-generation Cambodian-Americans, we are stuck in the middle of two sides: growing up and fitting in the troubled communities our families settled in, but also being raised by our parents who will forever remain afflicted by that trauma as survivors--who often can not even recall what happened during those years.

I wrote this song to channel the feelings of being in between both sides. This song is also dedicated to my grandmother.
