I performed this set on the Rust Stage at Resonance Music & Arts Festival in Masontown, West Virginia on Friday, September 17, 2021. It was a privilege to spin drum and bass for a welcoming crowd at dusk atop a beautiful mountain.

Hello, hello, hello and welcome back for the 11th episode in our synodically recurring mix series, 'Styles'; a mix series aimed at showcasing unique styles and subgenres nestled amongst the broad landscape of electronic dance music. This time around we are joined once again by GRA co-founder and resident DJ, Suspect, as he explores the dark corners of a little subgenre of Drum & Bass known as Neurofunk. Be sure to lock in and turn it up for this 33 minutes thriller!

"Neurofunk is a subgenre of drum and bass that emerged in the mid-1990s. It’s characterized by its dark, techy sound, heavy basslines, and complex rhythms. Aggressive basslines, often described as “metallic” or “robotic” combine with precise, intricate, and often syncopated drum patterns as well as atmospheric elements & minimal melodies to create a unique mixture that sets Neurofunk apart from other styles. The term “neurofunk” was coined by music journalist Simon Reynolds in 1997. He used it to describe the futuristic and neurotic sound of tracks by artists like Ed Rush, Optical, and Matrix. These producers were pushing the boundaries of techstep, incorporating elements of funk and creating a more polished, sci-fi inspired sound."

Few artists to emerge from North America’s Drum & Bass culture have made such a significant or enduring impact as San Francisco based trio Bachelors of Science. Formed in 2005, the group has carved out an unmistakable signature sound that spans the full emotional scope of the genre. From deep liquid over to the harder dance floor sounds of DnB, BoS have retained their musical quality and a loyal following, picking up a Beatport award for Best Drum n Bass single and several features on BBC Radio 1 while garnering DJ support across the scene from artists like LTJ Bukem, High Contrast, Friction, S.P.Y, Spectrasoul, Doc Scott, Bryan Gee, Marky, and many more.

Having released music on labels like Spearhead, Dirtybird, Fokuz, Horizons and Intrigue, in 2012 they launched CODE Recordings as an outlet for their music as well as standout productions from some of the top artists in the DnB scene.

On stage BoS bring an energy and vibe that is all their own. From top clubs like Fabric and Ministry of Sound to festivals and events such as Tomorrowland, Sun and Bass, Hospitality and Liquicity, the guys regularly perform around the world taking crowds on a unique journey with everything from originals and bootlegs to custom edits of cutting edge tracks and past future classics.
