Zion I Kings are in a deep dub dimension on Digital Ancient Dub, the third installment in their dub album series. Pushing the classic reggae dub genre with a unique take on dubbing original tracks without vocal drops as well as some with, featuring a cast of renowned artists from the Zion I Kings vaults. This album infuses, live horns, melodica, instrumental solo’s, trippy synths, psychedelic vocal pieces and heavy filtered drum sections akin to electronic dance music, this album creates a unique listening journey for real dub music fans worldwide. Choc full of heavy weight drum and bass grooves tracked spontaneously in the studio as well as a few programmed drum tracks to keep things current and interesting. 
The album kicks of with an epic steppers rhythm on “King Step Dub”, sailing through a strong melodica melody over a driving kick drum and sweeping bass line. Half way through we get down and dirty with the “Mean Streets Dub” pushing you into a back alley with a dark clavinet line and jazzed out octave guitar licks. Finishing off with the two ton “The System Dub” featuring Akae Beka & Pressure vocal drops along with an insane African drum solo laced into the groove.

After winning a Juno for best instrumental album of the year with Nostomania, Brace decided to start his own label by the same name to honor music of a similar kind. Nostomania records has already released a 7”, entitled Everyday featuring ESL Artists, Ancient Astronauts, and the Brown Bag AllStars. Synesthasia is the second album from Brace’s Electric Nosehair Orchestra Project.

Part of the concept for Nostomania was the idea that sound can pull up long neglected memories. Synesthaisa is something like a crossed wire in the brain where one sense connects with another; a color might have a certain smell, or maybe you can taste a sound. Once again visual artists were asked to provide images inspired by the songs on the record, but this time around don’t think about the places you’ve been.

Synesthasia opens with something that sounds like a mothership landing at some distant port of call. That’s the first clue that you’ve arrived in a strange land. Suddenly an unknown voice gives you the instruction to relax, and it’s time to let the music take control of your senses and guide you on your journey.

While there are some familiar elements from the last time around, it’s no longer what you’ve heard, seen, tasted or smelled before. So don’t be afraid to forge some new connections, and be sure to take a mental snapshot of whatever you might find.

In a UK reggae scene that has long eschewed bands in favor of sound systems, Backbeat Soundsystem are a different beast, bringing 8 musicians to the stage. While many of their peers are slavish in their attempt to recreate an authentic Jamaican-leaning sound, Backbeat Soundsystem are not afraid to go in totally different directions, pulling in influences from all across the music spectrum, to create their vision of modern reggae. Dean and Adjua effortlessly tear up the stage with lush harmonies, soaring melodies and natural born chemistry. This combined with a flawless horn section and undeniable groove leaves the audience mesmerised by their show stopping performance. Bringing an electronic flavour to the mix, with dub effects, sirens and live analog synthesiser, Backbeat Soundsystem remind the world that dub reggae is at the forefront of dance music culture.

Since forming in 2008, Backbeat Soundsystem has appeared at many of the best-known UK festivals, including Glastonbury, Boomtown Fair, Beautiful Days, Secret Garden Party, Greenman, Boardmasters, and many others, as well as toured in Europe and the United States. They’ve supported Madness, Cypress Hill, Arrested Development, Tinie Tempah, The Streets, and Dub Pistols. 
Following the success of two self-released EPs and two tours with Easy Star All-Stars in the UK, the band was signed by the U.S.-based reggae label Easy Star Records. Together Not Apart, the band’s debut full-length, came out in 2014 via Easy Star and brought a worldwide audience to this ambitious young band. The Punk Archive called Together Not Apart “…a top, top record and one you need in your collection,” while Shout 4 Music said it was “Packed with conscious lyrics, and buoyed by a reggae riddim filled with energy and positive vibes.”
