Roadside Picnic, first published in 1972, is the best-known work of Russia’s most famous modern science fiction writers, Arkady & Boris Strugatsky, together the authors of 26 novels and scores of short stories. To discuss it we are joined by the writer and radio presenter Jennifer Lucy Allan, and the publisher and translator Ilona Chavasse. The book is based on the premise that Earth has been briefly visited by an alien civilisation that have left behind them six ‘Zones’, places strewn with their debris, some of it lethal to humans; all of it fascinating and perplexing. The Zones feed a black market in artefacts supplied by ‘Stalkers’ who are prepared to risk their lives and sanity by entering the forbidden areas to retrieve them. We consider why the book is still considered one of the greatest of all SF novels, how it came to be read as a dark foreshadowing of the Chernobyl disaster and why it has proved itself so ripe for adaptation, both as a series of video games and, most famously, as the basis for Andrei Tarkovsky’s classic 1979 film, Stalker. This episode also finds Andy returning to a haunting novel he read earlier this year: The High House (Swift Press) by former guest Jessie Greengrass, while John is carried away by Everybody (Picador), Olivia Laing’s magnificent book about freedom and the human body.

This week, on the Global Research News Hour, we take a special look at the Dr. Kelly situation, with an individual partially responsible for bringing aspects of the suicide and the faulty behavior of the Lord Hutton inquiry to light in major media. His name if David Halpin who, together with a team of other physicians, are demanding a coroner’s inquest into Dr. Kelly’s death which he claims was not a suicide and was more likely a murder with the fingerprints of British government individuals all over it. An extensive interview taking up the majority of the hour, Dr. Halpin explains the specifics of his doubts about the official story, and the reasons he thinks Kelly may have been murdered.

Notes to this recording:
Last April, I went to a floodplain forest in southern Moravia to capture a bombina bombina at one of the wetlands. No sooner had I settled down on the shore than the bombina bombina starts to call. My son fell asleep in his bicycle seat, it was beautifully quiet, no wind, no people, so ideal conditions. I quickly connected the equipment and started recording. After pressing the record button, I heard a small sport plane approaching me in my headphones. It circled over the wetland and then over the floodplain forest continuously for twenty minutes, yes really twenty minutes. It alternately receded and approached. I cursed quietly and preferably away from the microphones, so luckily my comments are not heard on the recording. The next day I downloaded the recording to my computer and was determined to delete it. But I listened to the recording. Something happened that I didn't expect. From the first seconds, the picture seemed to me as a compositional unit. The hum of the aircraft engine entered the recording with gradually increasing volume and began to create a harmony in the lower frequency band to the call of the bombina bombina. Since then, I listen to nature sounds and the sound environment differently. During the recording session, I took a photo of the location and my son sleeping on the bike. I decided to use it as the cover image for the whole album Jaro because it reminds me of the day I started listening a little "different"
