Disquiet Junto Project 0556: Gabber Ambient
The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

I started with a 200 bpm Kickdrum in Live. It seemed to be enough for some minutes. I added a lot of things, just to not be lazy. From there I went one by feeling. It was basically a loop with minimal variations when I exported stems and recut the track in Reaper by destroying a lot of things. I am really neither a fan of Kickdrums nor from bpms faster than 90, but after all I liked the track.

Initially, I thought Gabber wouldn't be my cup of tea, but archive.org had some really interesting modern Gabber tracks under a Creative Commons License. The song that appealed to me the most was from an Indonesian production (Gabber Modus Operandi - Puxxximaxxx, "Hey Nafsu", https://archive.org/details/yesno091).

Ninety-nine percent of the sounds came from the track. I chopped up the snippets with Voltage Modular, stretched them in Ableton, and maltreated them with long effects chains. To add a bit of Ambient cliche, I added the song of a humpback whale (because, why not – sometimes a track needs a pink fluffy unicorn ribbon).

It still sounds rough around the edges, but maybe there's a genre of noise ambient it fits into.

The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0556” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Step 4: Post your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:

0822 Disquiet Junto 556 Snafu Snafu Hey

This track is intended to create the soundscape of a superficially quiet place, where the hectic noises of industrial manufacturing processes blend with the calm melodies of strings and piano.
The string part was played by a Sonic Pi algorithm programmed exclusivly for this track - it reacts on Midi-notes and creates highly randomized sections based on these inputs.

The music was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0556 (see below), the proposed Gabber-music inspired its interpretation as machine-induced production-sounds.

For Disquiet 0562 - The Assignment: Record something to help someone fall asleep.
I recorded the white noise from fans in my bedroom one night. I was working on another song that had a melody played ukelele and handpan sounds. Took those and used the chance setting in Ableton to lower the chance notes would play to very low. Wanted to have very subtle, sparse tones, nothing to think about too much as you try to fall asleep, but something melodic and mysterious for the background. Added a few tracks of drones, and some outdoor nature sounds from Freesound.org (Guz99 - https://freesound.org/people/Guz99/packs/30169/).  It may still be too busy and too much to fall asleep to, but it was fun experience to try. 'll have to try it out tonight. it's hard to create something to fall asleep to when you're awake. I wish I could make music while falling asleep.

The prompt this week was simple. “Record ice in a glass and do something”. But the thing I’m really enjoying about the disquiet exercise is what that ends up actually evolving into.

So this week I took two glasses (a whiskey tumbler and a Christmas decorative glass) filled one with ice and started pouring the ice back and forth in front of a mic. And then I sort of played an EP over it and kinda liked that, then something clicked, but the ice wasn’t right, but aha, the ice is kind of a shaker. So I recorded it again. Then modified the EP. And then had to fix the ice. And then play the ice again. And once that was in place, I added the small lead and bass and a light pad, some mastering and voila. Not that exciting a process.

Except, if you are reading carefully, I had to do 4 takes of the ice.

Finally, scientists unpacked the signal in Crop Circles, and amazingly they found encoded audio. The sounds were released Feb 21, 2076. Is it noise? It it speech? Is it an alarm? No-one knows, but the entire world is listening, rapt, to the strange and mysterious sound - a thrum and an unsettled whistle - trying to understand what it is that we have received. In the bar at the teleportation station which we last visited in disquiet0414, the night band sits silent, trying with everyone else to garner a glimpse of meaning. And then the pianist realizes the sound is an invitation to cooperate, a lead from a song that we have to write together across space and time. That some alien, deep in the past, was looking to sit in on the session and make music, and sent us that message as a pile of compressed wheat fields. So turn to the keys - pluck out a hint of a sympathetic melody. As the rest of the group joins in, the bar looks on, thinking:  “No. No, that’s probably not what the signal means. But let’s listen and order another cocktail anyway.”

This week is my 11th disquiet. As I’ve done with several others, I wrote some code and some music. This time I used python to extract 2 dimensional signals from the wikipedia image, turned slices of those signals into one dimensional signals, turned those one dimensional signals into midi cc, and pulled about 2 minutes of lots of midi control into Logic. I made a feedback-y Surge patch controlled by the CC, and then played along on piano. Nicely, as I was playing, I realized I was returning to the sound palette of disquiet0414, and so I wrote the above little micro-story in my head. And voila.

I’ve never met Marc. Almost swung by that bar in Dumbo 2 weeks ago but had another thing. But this week he took a picture of a pole and asked us to think about concerts of the past in this turbulent time. And wished us well. And I wish him well also.

Less surprisingly, I’ve also never met Thelonius Monk. In 1959, Wikipedia tells us, he recorded his third solo album “Thelonius Alone in San Francisco” at Fugazi Hall on October 21 and 22, live. 

But without an audience.

And recently I’ve been spending time with “Ruby, My Dear”, the second track from the record. It’s a fun item. This week with a friend and I just sort of ended up holding onto the chords to really let the voicings become part of my vocabulary. 

Those ideas all collided at once this afternoon. And while the resulting reflection on the first 8 bars of Monk’s piece really are pretty far away from the disquiet style and intent, I still thought I would share what I recorded anyway.
