Drum & bass stalwarts Black Sun Empire are to follow up a trio of recent EPs from The Upbeats, Neonlight and Pythius with the release of ‘Until The World Ends’ - a five-track, collaborative EP with NZ duo State Of Mind. Lead single ‘Ego’ will be released on 7th December via their genre-defining Blackout imprint, drawing an end to a prolific 2014 for the label. 

‘Ego’ immediately sets the tone for the rest of the EP, with growling bass lines and punchy synth-stabs underpining dark, techy atmospherics and vocal loops. Skittering melodics then give way to signature frenetic beats and firing drums to round off proceedings in style.

Blackout have built a reputation for curating their own brand of dark, neurofunk-inspired drum & bass over the past 12 months and this collaboration with long-term collaborators State Of Mind - who released their latest album ‘Eat The Rich’ via Blackout earlier this year - feeds into the hype already surrounding the label moving into 2015.

Now, he takes things further with Irresolute / Subterranean — a refined and forward-leaning two-tracker that showcases both his technical skill and creative range.

The release also features a collaboration with long-time friend Abstract, adding extra depth and contrast to the project’s atmospheric yet dancefloor-focused sound. Crisp drums, dynamic energy, and precision engineering define both tracks, positioning TER3NCE as one of the Netherlands’ most promising new voices in Drum & Bass.

Smooth has laid a steady foundation with his Drum & Bass productions of late. Between his work as one half of Telekinesis with releases on labels such as Blackout Music, Eatbrain, and Mainframe – along with his last release on Viper, ‘WTF / Revenge’ which wrapped up 2015 with monstrous noise and support from: Wilkinson, Matrix & Futurebound, Calyx & Teebee, TC, Audio, Metrik, Mob Tactics, and more. Starting of 2016, Smooth’s ‘True Grit EP’ brings plenty more dance floor destruction to continue the Slovenian’s mark in D&B. 

Leading the charge on the EP is ‘True Grit’. With occasional glimpses to the early days of rave, this track is nothing but forward thinking madness. You’ll need bags of energy to keep up with this one as ‘True Grit’ switches, changes and turns and every possible musical turn. Packed to the brim with attitude and balls this one’s not for the faint-hearted.

Next up is ‘Eraser’, which opens with a spacey atmospheric intro, only to get stripped back into a chunky underground banger. Going sparse on the riffs and heavy on the low end, ‘Eraser’ is a perfect draw for the early morning sets to get the crowd jumping. 

Switching gears, ‘Oxygen’ rolls deep with the melodies and high on that feel good liquid vibe. Subtly epic in its own right, ‘Oxygen’ gives us an early peak to the coming summer vibes. It has weight, presence, and the ability to make you tingle all over. 

Rounding off the EP is ‘Tinnitus’, a condition normally associated with the perception of noise or ringing in the eardrums. Smooth’s version is quite the opposite. After a brief intro, the full impact is laid out for all to bear witness, thundering drums and a huge bassline. A peak time dancefloor weapon has definitely been created here.

How long had he been in the waiting room? Time seemed to pass in an orderless fashion within this place, speeding up or slowing down, simply stopping or skipping forwards seemingly in accord with its own whims. Looking up from the television set before him, the man stole a glance at the receptionists at the front desk, who continued working diligently as before with little a thought spared in his direction. Checking his watch next, the man pondered at the time. When had his appointment been? 10 am? The watch read 10:05, and he did hope he might be called back soon. After all it was only a small matter, something wrong with his skin, though exactly what he could not remember. Leaning his head back to peer through the door to the examination rooms, the man noticed handprints adorning the window set within it. How charming that the doctors and nurses had had their children decorate their workplace, he thought with a smile. And such a nice smell the office had too! He hadn’t noticed it at first, but the clinic had a distinct scent of decay, quite alike to smells he had first discovered in the woods behind his grandparents’ house. Yes, that was it, that moist, rotting scent that came to the nose when a curious child first lifted a small log to discover what secrets might lay underneath. The memories flooded back to him. Such pleasant times those were, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Settling back into his seat, the man smiled, reminiscing in his childhood as another chunk of flesh fell from his cheek.
