Recorded in The Upbeats’ studio and mixed by mastering engineer Stuart Hawkes (Amy Winehouse, Rudimental, Disclosure, Katy B), SSXUB sees these bass music brothers-in-arms unleash four bin-rattling cuts that draw on their twinned production talents.

Shapeshifter and The Upbeats solidified their in-studio bond while they were working together on the Shifter’s chart-topping, platinum-selling album Delta and, as The Upbeats’ Dylan Jones explains, their latest partnership on SSXUB has allowed them to create a set even greater than the sum of its parts.

Shapeshifter and The Upbeats’ armies of supporters will have a chance to find out what SSXUB delivers when the EP rams speakers and dancefloors on Friday 12 September, spearheaded by ‘Bloodstream’ dropping on 22 August.

„Das Peng gebar sich selbst im Dichterdarm des Wörterwals. Es wuchs über Tage und Jahre bis es Finger auf den Augen und Ohren an den Füssen trug. Es tanzte durch die Blutbahn des Wals, bis es den Rand seines mächtig pumpenden Herzens erreichte. Dort erblickte es das leise singende Bing, das den Wal am Leben erhielt. Es kroch voran zum Auge des Tieres, nahm allen Mut zusammen und sonderte sich als Träne ab, um mit dem Ozean zu verschmelzen. Der Ozean war eine raue Seele und schleuderte ihn durch haushohe Wellen und reißende Strudel hinab in die Tiefen seiner unermesslichen Weite. Und dort, im schwärzesten Schwarz, erwartete ihn das Monster. Es griff mit Saugnapf besetzten Krakenarmen nach ihm und zog ihn sanft in seinen Schoß. Käptn Peng & Die Tentakel von Delphi sind nach „Expedition ins O“ von 2013 mit ihrem zweiten Band- Studioalbum zurück und es geht darauf laut Peng „wieder um bestimmte Dinge (und auch Gefühle).“ Neben den Tentakel-typischen Sujets wie Wahnsinn, Erleuchtung oder skurrile Monster, wird auf „Das Nullte Kapitel“ unter anderem die Kreiszahl Pi auseinander klamüsert, mit rasierten Igeln in einer irren Traumreise durch Spiegelkabinette gejagt oder die Menschheit nach und nach vom marodierenden Planeten gefegt. Surrealer Text trifft beschwippste Mitsing-Refrains, Metaebene trifft heimliches Augenzwinkern. Erstmals im Themen-Angebot: die klassische Liebes-Schmonzette. Produziert und aufgenommen wurde erneut im bandeigenen Berliner Studio, zusammen mit dem langjährigen Toningenieur der Band Jens Güttes. Galten die Tentakel mit ihrem musikalischen Kuriositätenkabinett aus Bürsten, Töpfen, Fahradklingeln, Betonkübeln, brummelnden Kontrabässen und präparierten Gitarren lange Jahre als die HipHop-Band mit den baufälligsten Instrumenten, haben sich auf der neuen Platte auch ein paar Synthesizerklänge eingeschlichen, die dem maroden Charme des Bandsounds eine abgespacte Note geben. Ordentlich rumpeln tut es natürlich nach wie vor.

Finally fusing together his two music loves, drum & bass and metal, with such clarity, “Reminisce” sets the benchmark in what to expect from TIB’s new album and music from now on.

Natty Campbell (Chase & Status, Chopstick Dubplate & Dub Pistols) also returns for vocal duties after last year’s collaboration “Set It” (ProgRam), providing a high energy vocal, perfectly complimenting the track’s aggressive low-tuned guitars and driving drums.

Since its inception in 2018, Maztek’s 0101 Music has gone from strength to strength, catering for a vast array of styles of drum and bass ranging from neurofunk to halftime. Having already springboarded the careers of emerging talents like nabepro and Bad District, the Dutch label’s Divison imprint now returns with its first compilation album, one of its most ambitious outings to date. Weighing in at a whopping seventeen tracks, Sonic Codes Vol. 1 features a combination of longstanding signees and deserving newcomers, all hand-picked for inclusion by Maztek himself to make for a gargantuan LP.
Close followers of the label’s developments will no doubt be pleased to see residents like Binary and Alerstorm contributing exclusive cuts to the new project; in fact, it even features the pair’s first ever collaboration, a barbed, mechanical number entitled “Siege”. Neurofunk aficionados will recognise a number of familiar faces making their label debuts, too: Germany’s Kaiza, whose recent contributions to Bad Taste, Citrus and Red Light have marked him out as one to watch, appears twice on the compilation, teaming up with Vertex and Fearend on the syncopated heater “Papercut” and banding together with his C4C-approved crew Instinkt for the stuttering stepper “Serpens”. Meanwhile, seasoned Belgian badman Taos showcases his gritty synth work on “Ungreyed Tones”, and the fast-rising Belarusian trio Psynchro – whose recent output includes appearances on RAM, Eatbrain and Cyberfunk – turn in “Composite”, a cinematic number punctuated by garbled basslines and murmuring subs.
True to form, Maztek has also unearthed a whole host of little-known production wizards, sourced from right across the globe. The enigmatic Loded offers up a jittering, jagged belter entitled “Break Out”, while Italy’s Eclict teams up with fellow newcomer FMD&B for the neuro juggernaut “Turbolence” and London tag team Edison & SMP excel with the dark, percussive creeper “Ganglands”. With all this and more on offer over the course of the LP, there’s plenty to get stuck into…
