In October last year enigmatic Melbourne producer/musician Yeo presented yet another incarnation of his career-defining musical evolution in the form of a lo-fi, proto-R&B jam called Girl,. While the single may have caught some familiar with his past works by surprise, Girl, was met with instantaneous approval from countless blogs the world over as well as drawing praise across-the-board among the taste-making jocks at triple j.

By year’s end, Girl, had amassed 100k streams on Soundcloud and Youtube and earned a place on multiple ‘Best of 2013’ lists including TheRipe.tv, Me And All My Friends, Tonedeaf and Canada’s Hilly Dilly.

Having spent the summer touring alongside Ngaiire, Fractures and most recently Glass Animals (UK), Yeo reveals the second offering from his forthcoming debut EP, the infectious Kobe. Produced by Yeo and mixed by Phil Threlfall, Kobe captures much of the aesthetic of the Girl, wrapped into an intellectual pop song with significant ear-worming capabilities.

The release of Kobe foreshadows Yeo’s maiden international tour dates courtesy of an invitation to showcase at Canadian Music Week 2014 ahead of a planned national headline run of dates in June.

Princes of electronic-pop with a nu-soul bent, Canberra-based overachievers, SAFIA have kicked off 2014 in style. Having just announced that they will support Kiwi queen bee, Lorde on her impending national tour, the trio are also revelling in the success of their latest single, Paranoia, Ghosts and Other Sounds.  Officially released this April, the single hit the #1 spot on Hype Machine, racking up almost 80,000 Soundcloud plays, selected as Zan Rowe's Catch of the Day and added to rotation on Triple J and national radio.  

Wielding the unique skill of defying genre as if it were a dark art, their debut Listen To Soul, Listen to Blues enjoyed significant national airplay, moving on to be nominated for the coveted J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year as well as racking up over 135,000 Soundcloud plays as it steam-rolled into the #1 position on the iTunes Electronic Chart.  Finding its way on-air at US college radio, XFM (UK), George FM (NZ) and Amazing Radio (UK), the outfit quickly started making a name for themselves both locally and abroad.

Adelaide. There’s no time to wallow in the mire. 

If you do you’re just gonna get sucked away. Sucked up north through the city’s decaying fringe, past the closed Mitsubishi plant, past Snowtown, past Port Augusta and into the dry red nothingness. 

Sure the trams stopped here in 1958 , sure venues keep closing, sure the good bands keep leaving for Melbourne and sure, you gotta keep paying the bills. But just have a bloody crack and then keep on chooglin’ .

Bad//Dreems know this. That’s why they got together the summer before last, sweating it out in a warehouse next to the West End Brewery. 

And it’s these sentiments that underlie Hoping For, the centerpiece of their debut EP Badlands.


“When my minds at ease
When I show up at your door
When I’m not strung out,
I can give you what you need
That’s what I’m hoping for”.

Yeah, I admit my faults . We all screw up. Times might be bad but there’s something better around the corner. The schooner’s still half full!

There’s no musical pretensions here. The band might like me to mention the early 80s Australian underground or US outsiders like the Replacements or Wipers, but this is just heart on your sleeve rock and roll: three honest chords, a driving beat and ragged vocals.

But then again, you can’t help but feel the desperation in Marwe’s voice, like a slug in the guts, when the band crashes into that minor change and he lets go:

And I feel like I can change!

The video for the clip was shot in Port Adelaide and in the north of South Australia around Orroroo. It was directed Alex Watkins from whobyfire.com

Since their debut single Chills in 2012 Bad//Dreems have released a two further singles, seeing them end the year as the second most played act on triple j unearthed. They have supported acts such as Wavves (US), Children Collide, Oh Mercy, The Reubens and Cut Off Your Hands (NZ).

The lead single from Badlands received airplay on triple j and community radio. Their take on The Seeds’ Pushing Too Hard will be featured on the upcoming vinyl release of the Nuggets re-release.

Bad//Dreems were born during an Adelaide heatwave in the summer of 2012. Ben Marwe, Alex Cameron, James Bartold & Miles Wilson began playing together in a whitegoods warehouse on the banks of the River Torrens, a drop punt away from the West End Brewery. 

Their first release, the Badlands EP led to attention from TripleJ & US college radio. The debut LP Dogs At Bay (2015) & follow up Gutful (2017), both produced by Mark Opitz, cemented their place as one of the most exciting Australian guitar bands of recent times. They’ve toured extensively both in AUS and abroad, appearing at Splendour in the Grass, Falls & Laneway festivals & supporting acts such as Midnight Oil, At The Drive In, The Avalanches, Wolf Alice, Scientists & Cold Chisel. 
2019 saw the addition of long time live member engineer Ali Wells to the band. 

Their 3rd album, ‘Doomsday Ballet’ is due for release October 18 2019, which was recorded in Adelaide with production from Burke Reid & Jack Ladder.
