Currently celebrating one hundred releases with a set of EPs from label bosses Drumsound and Bassline Smith themselves, Technique Recordings has established itself as one of the finest labels in the drum and bass scene over the past decade. Scene legends like Roni Size, J Magik & Wickaman, Friction, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, Crissy Criss, Tantrum Desire, ShockOne and
Youngman have all graced this imprint, and you’ll consistently find the Technique name at the top of genre charts and smashing clubs worldwide. It’s no surprise that this label has assembled a sufficiently heavyweight back catalogue to fill a forty-three track LP with remastered classics and exclusive VIP selections.
Time for a Retrospective.
This album takes you in every direction, covering all wavelengths of the drum and bass spectrum. Drumsound and Bassline Smith, along with their alter-ego 2DB, provide an extensive selection of the tracklisting, backed up by their label’s current international soldiers and a selection of those heavy-hitters who’ve graced the imprint over the years.
So, in the midst of the bombardment from the label bosses, Tantrum Desire pop up with their big-room killers, Crissy Criss & Youngman drop in to grime things up a touch, and Dub Foundation flip things into half-step style. And, to show this is a truly worldwide movement, there are contributions from Ukraine’s MaxNRG, Slovakia’s L Plus, and a couple of combos hailing from down under, Skyver & D Jon and Spectrem & Spillage.
All this and choice cuts from Roni Size, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, Digital, J Majik & Wickaman, plus an appearance from TeeBee on remix duties. No wonder the Technique brand continues to raise its status.
Over the years, and their hundred releases, Drumsound and Bassline Smith’s Technique Recordings have proven themselves to be a monumental institution in the drum and bass scene. Every one of these tracks has graced raves and airwaves worldwide, and while this Retrospective is looking back at the classics, it also promises big things for the next Technique century.

Drumsound  &  Bassline  Smith  –  The  Hustler  As  unpredictable  as  summers  tend  to  be  in  the  UK,  one  thing  can  be  relied  on.  In  the  season  of  carnivals,  barbecues,  and  party  tunes,  the  annual  Technique  Summer  LP  will  deliver  the  perfect  soundtrack.  So,  let's  see  what  DnB  delights  are  in  store  for  us  this  year.  This  taster  comes  from  the  Technique  bosses  themselves,  Drumsound  &  Bassline  Smith.  And,  as  you'll  probably  know,  since  last  summer,  they've  been  busier  than  ever.  Not  content  with  releasing  a  brand  new  album  and  a  huge  North  American  tour,  they've  also  given  their  own  definition  to  contemporary  jungle  rollers  with  their  recent  “Kilimanjaro  EP”.  That's  what's  known  in  the  trade  as  “work-rate”.  So,  “The  Hustler”  comes  as  part  of  an  all-encompassing  surge  of  formula-twisting  creativity  for  these  veteran  producers.  And,  as  the  first  hints  of  percussion  and  siren-song  atmospherics  draw  us  into  this  tune,  it's  clear  we're  in  for  an  epic  journey.  It  might  be  a  summertime  track,  but  this  is  serious.  As  we're  hit  with  the  punch  of  the  drop,  one  thing  is  obvious.  This  is  guaranteed  rewind  material.  Drumsound  &  Bassline  Smith  seem  to  have  fed  steroids  to  an  upright  bass,  the  almost  jazz  flavour  counterbalanced  by  the  raw  viciousness  of  the  processing.  As  it  drills  into  your  brain,  supported  by  characteristic  rinse-out  junglist  drums,  there's  no  doubt  that  this  tune  is  going  to  be  doing  substantial  damage  this  summer.  Of  course,  let's  not  forget  that  this  release  is  just  a  sample  of  the  full  majesty  of  what's  to  come  from  the  full  Summer  2018  LP.  If  this  is  anything  to  go  by,  rave  and  festival-goers  had  better  brace  themselves  for  the  onslaught.

Drumsound & Bassline Smith - The Hustler (Rene Lavice Premiere

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Rene LaVice made a huge impression on the drum & bass fraternity with the immense ‘Headlock’ released as part of the ‘Dimensions 5’ EP. The rolling, almost nostalgic feel of the track coupled with Rene Lavice’s intimate knowledge of the studio made for a clear standout track, and led Ram Records to offer this exciting producer an exclusive recording contract.

Here we see the first fruits of that contract, as Rene prepares to unleash the beast in the form of the ‘Absolute Monster’ EP. Spanning four brand new tracks across the vinyl package with the addition of an exclusive VIP mix of ‘Headlock’ for the digital bundle, this is set to catapult Rene Lavice to the forefront of everyone’s minds this summer.

Leading the charge is ‘Dank’ a highly potent brew that’ll have dance floors smoking whenever it’s dropped. Skipping beats and cleverly placed mentasms are delivered alongside chopped vocal snippets and long bass notes that drag you in and don’t let go. 

‘Meow’ employs cheeky P Funk references to great effect. Harking back to the kind of sounds D&B fans heard in ’96 but with an effortlessly smooth updating, Rene Lavice’s attention to detail and crisp production shine through here, creating a track that will undoubtedly be a DJ favourite.

Next up the title track takes you deep into the paranoid side of Rene Lavice’s music. Laden with impending doom, this track is like taking a walk in the woods alone at night; every moment filled with tension, every sound creating anxiety before the drop releases a wave of pent up energy. 

‘Dungeon’ shows another side to Rene Lavice with layer upon layer of percussive energy that rolls along into infinity. Once again it’s the attention to detail that pins this track together as minimalist simplicity clashes with rhythmic complexity.

Finally ‘Headlock’ VIP boosts up the digital package with all the stepping greatness of the original blended up with plenty of twists and turns to deliver a great new take on Rene’s dance floor favourite.
