beautiful afraid

Our new release has landed from the Netherlands, by Amsterdam-based producer and DJ, @dan1dang3r. Beginning their musical journey as a classical pianist, Dani crafted deeply emotional, nostalgic cinematic compositions before transitioning to guitar and vocals with a post-punk influence. Over time, they moved into electronic production, drawing from trance, eurodance, trap, UK bass and ambient.

A recent graduate of the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Dan1dang3r is now pushing the boundaries of post-club music, blending intricate sound design with a heartfelt, authentic approach to connecting through sound. This release carries a personal story, shaped by experiences of grief and loss, but transformed into something reflective and moving.

Personal note from Dani:
This song is an ode grief. I find grieving to be an integral part of (my) life and grief a lot about different things on a daily basis. The constant changes happening in life can be very daunting and hard to process for me as i’m a very sensitive soul, however I manage to find beauty in grief for it puts me in a state of melancholia and nostalgia and tends to reconnect me with versions of myself that I’d forgotten about, or states of being that I’ve come to appreciate more over time. Grief strips down the complex layers of being a human to it’s essence and it’s exactly this purity that I believe we all have in our hearts that makes me admire grief as an emotional process.
The particular grief that i’ve put into this piece of music has been evoked by the loss of a very special person that has immensly inspired me and will continue to do so for the rest of my living days; I wouldn’t have been the same hadn’t I met her. She was love and light and chaos and everything in between (and above!) and she’s taught me so much about myself and helped me grow and reach insights that I believe I wouldn’t have had nearly as soon (if ever) hadn’t i met her. She’s constantly with me in spirit and her and her legacy and energy will breath through me and my music and my very existence at all times. I miss you Dextra, I really fucking miss you. I’ll make sure no one will forget you and all you added to the world in the short time you graced us with ur presence, my love (how could they, you absolute icon). I love you.

Entering NHS territories we have SHALT of London origin, Amsterdam-based, manager of his own fresh imprint REMADE and whose works have featured alongside Atrice; duo who have contributed to the NHS universe previously with their 'Accumulation Zone' EP. His offering and debut on the Label is a blistering set of transmogrified aspects of electro, techno, UK Funky and leftfield, UK-oriented bass into abrasive, molten-like tracks that play on the fault line of mechanical and natural through rigid, tight rhythm and granular, time stretched and downright sinister sonics.

Our artist reflects on the EP's title 'Mistral', it's namesake being reference to a wind path that runs through Southern Europe, acting as a folkloric and simultaneously scientific form of purification for the terrain that it flows through. The aural quality of the release, a pairing of rigidity and organic flowing freedom, is personified acutely through this with clear intention; audio sweeps and rumbles steadily, shifting into flutters and jitters, much like the haphazard elegancy of wind as it moves where it likes.

Equally, this sense of science and modernity that is evident through the use of digital technology is inadvertently juxtaposed against the ancient forms of geological understanding evident through folklore and druidry; SHALT feels they have used this as a means to invite the diminishing world of the ancients to cavort with the new world.

Inspired by the iconic tradition of the sample pack, the Source Folder series seeks to explore the diversity of interpretations, paths and offsprings that might emerge from a common resource. In each installment, a member of the Global URL Nation provides a sample pack from which other artists are invited to create a new track.

For this second edition, we welcome long-time collaborator Bademjan - a French artist blending heavily processed instruments with arcane atmospheres and raw emotions to unveil the sublime in their delicate intricacies.

For the project, he drew inspiration from early video game music, challenging 14 artists to collaboratively imagine the soundtrack of an ethereal, otherworldly video game. At the heart of the project is a collection of 25 custom-designed instruments – a unified palette of ambient washes, celestial leads, and weathered textures – that served as the exclusive sound source for the tracks, reminiscent of the creative limitations of the 16-bit era.

The result is a compilation of 14 tracks by aeria, B E N N, commun des mortels, False Self, Guenter Råler, Indigoblue, jjjacob, Léo Dubois, Levier, Lukann, Peow Beow, Sçlé, Sioban and Sopoorific.

Each track feels like a gateway to its own unique realm, a portal to its own liminal space, where wistful melodies and haunting textures intertwine. While some tracks evoke a tender nostalgia, wrapping the listener in bitcrushed warmth, others explore darker, more mysterious tones – all coming together beautifully as an immersive journey through uncharted dreamscapes.
