BRAILLED: MUTANT JOE 2021

The 15th release of katharsis is the EP “Otra Vida” by Serbian artist Cuban Chamber of Commerce. Spanning four tracks, the EP portrays the gloomiest corners of your subconscious emotional landscape by blending ghostly pads and eerie sound effects with a deep reverberating bass. But even though the atmosphere is filled with tension and has a high chance of provoking goosebumps, the EP has a mysteriously hopeful and embracing quality to it.

“Otra Vida” is quite a deviation from the artist’s former releases, as his earlier works are more bass-driven and dancefloor-oriented. With two successful releases under his belt, respectively on Molten Moods and his own label kepasaparadoks, the artist now seeks to explore new sonic territories by putting emphasis on textures, atmosphere and field recordings instead of complex high-tempo drum patterns. As hinted in the title, “Otra Vida” carries a message of the different and unknown, which is well carried through to the listener by the ghostly mood of the EP.

This mix was somewhat of a departure from my typical live mixes in its arrangement/ tonal considerations. Having developed a slight cynicism towards the current direction of dance music, I chose tracks with little to no regard for genre or BPM, focusing more on tone and intensity. While there are a couple of danceable moments, it’s definitely hard to call this a ‘dance mix’, but more so a collection of tracks that explore the deconstruction of genre and my hopes for the direction of electronic music in the future.

Pour son émission mensuelle du mois d'avril, @bienvenueauclub invite @soumayapheline. 

DJ basée à Bruxelles, active sur la scène locale depuis 2006,  notamment résidente sur @Kioskradio, ces selectas respirent une excellence déconsertante. Elle n'est pas là pour mettre la foule à l'aise mais plutôt constamment jouer avec ses attentes, en combinant diverses sous-genres de la musique éléctronique.  Sans jamais vraiment nous donner le kick, le climax ou la respiration dont on pensait avoir besoin. Lourd en basses, breaks, melodies hypnotisantes et vocales rythmiques, les sets de Soumaya distordes et déranges d'une façon étrangement satisfaisante.

"Bruital" is a mix between brutal and noise. Brutality in music can take many forms, and it can even appear gentle or voluptuous. In this sense, it shares the same properties as violence or rage, which can be contained and spread all around us without us being aware.
