Longhaul 014 [with Monoak] - London Modular Alliance

For our RA2122 series, we've been focusing on dyed-in-the-wool DJs paying tribute to the places that were most important to them. But what if you're an electronic music superstar and you didn't necessarily get your musical education in a club? That's how we come to Marie Davidson, a Canadian artist who counts among the world's most engaging and electrifying live performers, mixing techno with electroclash and post-punk for a sound that feels familiar but totally new at the same time. In 2019, she announced she was retiring from live club music, and then formed a band with fellow Montreal scenesters. But on her RA Podcast, she returns to dance music with a cannonball-sized splash.

To hear her tell it, Davidson only became interested in DJing recently—she's only been doing it for a few months. It's a new way for her to explore club music and also pay tribute to the artists she loves, without putting her whole self out there in the same way required of live performances.

But you could never tell that Davidson is new to DJing. Her RA Podcast is  a masterpiece of modern techno building and pacing, dipping into straight-up trance several times in a way that reminds us of Sasha's legendary Global Underground 013: Ibiza mix CD, with an hour of steady tension rewarded with one hell of a melodic payoff. She sounds like she's ready to play at some of the world's best clubs, proof positive you don't need to have the usual backstory to be an excellent DJ.

Marie Montexier - Live at Butik Festival 2023

UK artist Gatto Fritto is someone who operates in the shadows, in his own little world.  The man born Ben Williams played our Selectors festival in Croatia last year and holds down residencies at Berlin institutions Sameheads and Renate, which prove why he is such a revered DJ. His work as a producer, too, has resulted in some exceptionally cosmic disco on standard bearers like International Feel and Dissident, as well as his own Fritto Morto. It’s twinkling, spine tingling stuff awash with melodies, FX and astral synths that transport you into the cosmos. 

A sense of frosty melody and plenty of pixelated synths characterise the nearly two hour selection he has put together for us here. It starts in abrasive and arresting fashion with serrated lines and stark drums before unravelling into sci-fi grooves then Italo, proto-disco and slippery electro. After exploring these diverse yet interconnected sound worlds for the first half, the second half races through an icy and intergalactic brand of techno that leaves you utterly breathless.

After kicking off with an atmospheric rhythmic rock number from prog lords King Crimson, Peder Mannerfelt’s contribution to Bleep’s mix series settles into a run of driving leftfield club tracks. By blending entries from artists like Amazondotcom, Griffit Vigo and Robert Hood, Mannerfelt expertly straddles the line between classic techno modes and more progressive broken-beat innovations in the first half of this mix. The tempo picks up around the forty-minute mark, with Mannerfelt running 140 bpm joints that enmesh genres like dubstep, bassweight techno and junglist breaks. The final quarter of an hour may find Mannerfelt stripping out the pounding rhythms, but the mix remains arresting to the last - be it offering a widescreen, largely weightless collaboration between Mannerfelt and Louisahhh or Junior Delgado’s rocksteady dub-reggae joint ‘Midnight Rave’.

New Nous’klaer Radio by this killer DJ duo from Rotterdam: Black Cadmium. Back in September we had the pleasure of throwing one last party with these guys at Keilecafe, just before the current lockdown. With a crowd going mad, Joginda and Mike closed the night and even played two hours more than planned. Needless to say this mix is in a similar fashion - one and a half hour of power mixing that will make it impossible to stay seated.
