"After Ecstasy, the Laundry"

This mix was recorded using digital and vinyl at home in Echo Park, Los Angeles during the height of a lockdown in 2021. It’s very special to me because I challenged myself to explore a downtempo aesthetic in my selections while still applying my usual affinity for solid foundational grooves fused with deep emotional textures. The title of the mix is ‘After Ecstasy, The Laundry’ – originally the title of a book by Western buddhist philosopher Jack Kornfield, the phrase alludes to that feeling after a particularly uplifting and transcendent experience when you are forced to face that all good things must end. With this mix I hoped to encapsulate that feeling but with a light, uplifting, and more positive essence, reflecting my own drive not to focus on the fact that these ecstatic moments have ended, but allowing them to enrich your life and cultivate the future.

Introduce yourself? Pronouns? Where do you currently reside? 

Hi! My name is Sam aka Samwise. I’m a selector/DJ, A&R, curator, promoter, and eternal raver. My pronouns are He/Him. I’m currently based in Los Angeles, but spend a considerable amount of time in London as well.

Describe your DJ set up in full detail?

My home setup consists of 2x Technics 1200 MKII turntables (internally grounded) as I like to have the freedom to play both vinyl and digital records, an Allen & Heath XONE 92 mixer (sorry to my V10 bbs but team XONE 100p), and 2x Pioneer XDJ-700 cdjs (I prefer having older CDJs for my home setup because they do nothing for you (technically speaking) and force you to play by ear. Ideal for practicing + warm ups.

Favorite movie and why? 

Darron Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream. I love bold, esoteric, analytical films with a dark and preferably psychological tinge. Aronofsky is the best of the best at this in my view, and this film remains his most poignant work. 


Listen to the moment at 45 min mark in your PI mix… describe how it makes you feel? 

This moment makes me feel solid, rooted, and hopeful. For me, recording mixes is a cathartic and therapeutic process that largely reflects an experience that I’ve gone through. This particular mix is really important to me on a personal level because I recorded it shortly after I uncovered a deeply rooted childhood trauma. The progression of the mix echoes the process of integrating this trauma into my life – in other words, realizing the way this has informed my way of living/behaving and how to move forward with the knowledge that it happened. The 45 min mark is the point at which I am able to shift away from being introspective and somber, and towards a newfound ability to be hopeful and rooted again.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community? 

I’d love to see more musical diversity and openness from DJs, promoters, and attendees alike. I think we made a lot of progress breaking down musical boundaries post-Covid, but we still have a long way towards destroying musical pretentiousness. Dance music is about connection and togetherness in all forms, period!

Undeniably demanding, occasionally straining, but often rewarding and invariably reassuring. In nuce, this is the existential rollercoaster rode by anyone willing to partake in this world of merry music we all strive to keep in motion and feed with emotion for the sole purpose of creating some magic moments that, if not wholly life changing, can be vastly mind altering and deeply heartwarming. However, as far as descriptions go and as honest and earnest as these are, descriptions rarely do justice to the most precious aspects of what is involved here. And this engulfs quite a lot of efforts carried out through manifold fronts that happen to find an outlet in this special space that serves as much more than a place for the meeting of forces, it is a catalyst for possibilities, allowing for the collision of intentions and the fusion of visions. Each episode aims at presenting the results of these encounters, all of them widely varied in terms of the rhythms they include and wildly vivid in the scenes they introduce. So, when we have a guest whose artistic presence is as multifarious as Samwise's, the potential for greatness is enhanced. As a gifted selector, he can be heard sharing his musical knowledge and taste at some of the finest festive initiatives around the globe, as well as helming his own Fast At Work events. His contribution to the series is a mind-opening and world-revealing trip across eclectic and ecstatic soundscapes.

“This is really a special record for Astrophonica. It could be argued that Jim Coles aka Om Unit’s Philip D Kick alias spawned an entire movement which dictated the sound of future. The three Philip D Kick ‘Footwork Jungle’ EPs released in 2011 saw Jim take classic Jungle anthems and footwork them. At the time, this was mind-blowing, I’d never heard anything like it. Even though I had been checking for Footwork and of course, have a history and love for Jungle. These edits spawned a generation of younger producers and revitalised older producers like myself. It also bought Jim and I together as friends and later on collaborators. So it is with great pleasure and genuine excitement that I present to you Philip D Kick’s first original material – Pathways.”

"I decided once I was done with my Om Unit ‘Self' project that I wanted to have some real fun with breaks again, and something drew me back to working at 160bpm, I wanted to make some more fun light-hearted stuff, and so I felt like returning to the Philip project would be a nice way of not only re-visiting something that was such a vibe back in the day but also now that all the fuss around so called 'jungle footwork' as a 'thing' has died down."

Pathways opens with ‘In Formation’ which sets off with familiar breaks before descending into uncharted Acid Footwork Jungle territory. ‘Work That’ traces the 4/4 UK hardcore lineage to plot a new course for the dance floor. ’Drown’ draws energy from drum-funk to discover an ethereal breakdown that leads to a sound killing Amen finale. Two worlds collide on the same course in ’Vibe Off’ with Chicago based Footwork pioneer DJ Spinn claiming he’s vibing off the beat and honestly, who can blame him? ’For Real’ is a fitting ending to Pathways. A lights out and headphones on journey from moody drum machine rhythms to euphoric synth lines.

Pathways is released 31st May 2018 on Limited Edition 12” & Digital with Limited Edition A3 Risograph prints, and Limited Edition Tshirts with DTG oversize prints on US-Import Tees. As always big shout Utile Creative (and Philip D Kick’s Reebok Classics) for the artwork.

SPFDJ - HATE Podcast 121

Nu Guinea came together over a love of studio jam sessions. The Berlin based Italians fuse live instrumentals and synthesisers that journey to far corners fo the musical world, from weird disco to exotica, world grooves via ethno rhythms. Their most adventurous work has come in the form of albums on their own NG Records as well as Early Sounds Recordings, one of which found them rewire original Tony Allen drum recordings with their own jazz-funk vibes.

In the mix for us this week they stir up a steamy summer session of boogie bass, township funk and squelchy synth goodness. It’s 90 minutes of storytelling music that speaks of a lifetime of digging deep into local sounds and scenes and stitching them all together with the sort of underlying grooves that transcend boundaries and bring people together under the sun.
