Hundreds of industry actors, promoters and performers have held marches across the country in six cities over the past weekend, to protest against the restrictions that have forced dozens of festivals and events cancellations this summer.  

The “Unmute Us” marches in Amsterdam gathered a multigenerational crowd of thousands of party-lovers dancing around trucks and sound systems, carrying slogans like “Don’t Cancel Culture,” or “Fight for your right to party.”

“We were really blown away by the massive turnout, and the positive vibes that everybody brought to the streets. Very proud to show the rest of the Netherlands: this is what we do best. This is our job, what we live for: organizing large-scale events. I think we have shown both the professionalism of our scene, and the scale of our audience. It’s about time our policymakers show us some respect, and stop muting the voice of more than 100,000 workers and our 1mio+ audience,” told us Bram Merkx, Global Marketing Director at DGTL, and one of the initiators of the protest.

Because of the spread of the delta variant, festivals and large events are banned until the 31st of October. The organizers of the March demand the ban to be lifted on 1st September, as  crowds are already allowed to congregate in massive numbers in football stadium with proof of vaccination, with no effect on infection rates. 

In late June, Dutch clubs and festivals had reopened, but an increase in cases prompted the government to enforce new restrictions. Only one-day events are currently permitted in the country with a maximum of 750 visitors either vaccinated, tested or recovered from the virus.

“It is ridiculous that – even after Saturday’s noise and turnout – we still haven’t heard anything from our government. Almost feels like they are deliberately ignoring our part of society. In an open letter to prime minister Mark Rutte, we demanded answers to our questions before the end of this week. If they keep muting our scene, we will be forced to announce further action. As you have noticed, we are able to mobilize large-scale protests, which remain positive and peaceful. But I sincerely hope they don’t confuse our peaceableness with complacency. Our patience has run out. Unmute us!”

Long time dear friend Jonny Rock (@jonnyrock) from London up in the mix for the 33rd in our MFM Mix series. Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Thanks for the mix and for taking time to answer these questions Jonny. Whatsup? 

JR: It is an absolute honor to do the mix and thanks for twisting my arm for the interview. Surfin’ the wild waves of the times at the moment… hanging tight on the board, but like water.. finding my way, with huge amounts of entertaining falls.

MFM: I once read you saying wanting to go “...fucking off from London, moving to LA or somewhere else”. Why would you want to trade London for another place?

JR: London is an addiction. been here since ’91 so hard to get it out of the system. working on a sunnier outlet to share the time which on its own puts a smile on my face but still enjoying London for its dirt and being versatile. LA is still and always in my heart for its sun and people.  

MFM: Looking at your discography your studio outcome is an almost equal balance of your own works and edits. Would you say other people's music is a major source of inspiration and motivation? Do you have a steady pace/rhythm of producing or...?

JR: Other peeps music I listen to is of course a huge inspiration or motivation. Even with ‘original‘ works I always have a trigger point. An inspiration from a record.. a dusty loop from somewhere. I play guitar but I am not an analog machine man (burn him burn him). I love samples, loops, rolandcloud on the go… but no particular pace tbh. sometimes a random focused period comes out fruitful. Sometimes it just doesn’t work so I leave it. It’s a sign that I need to have a break in my head. Edits come up as I find songs so the balance must be coincidental. 

MFM: You're the first guest on the mix series who actually requested to keep the comments off. Does it have to do with the 'music like water' principle these days?

JR: Well this idea also came out of the lost year. I was away from mixing for a while and podcast to-do pile had grown. And thought maybe one can try to rebalance listening to music and the way music is shared and searched. While the world is taken over by clicks and likes and online hangouts, thought maybe we push the talks and search back on real people interaction. From my side I asked kindly to the people I did the podcasts for, as an experiment…. let’s try it. Move away from ‘track id’s’ etc.     

MFM: You seem to be a romantic kinda guy with an old school approach when it comes to exploring and experiencing and valuing music. Does the '2021 way' offer only downsides from your point of view, or...?  

JR: I try to hang on to my own journey with belt and braces, so not to lose my values, and mind. A daily exercise sometimes to stop time and re-align to keep on staying true. Like all artforms there is controversy bubbling up in the speed of light everywhere with ‘kind’ help of the ‘social media’…  

MFM: Word on the street is that you've got a new thing coming up, a new label. Tell us all about it!!!

JR: Yessss its true … ‘Jonny Rock Orijinal’. A label for me by me featuring me. ‘Not an edit’ will probably write at the back of a t-shirt at some point. I felt it was the right time to have an outlet for the various explosions of my mind. Hopefully out in the wild by January. Hamam series is also branching out to a ‘Hamam Originals’ imprint too. 

MFM: Thanks too for the mix! Any specific theme or records or vibe you had in mind before or while recording it? 

JR: Not really to be honest. Tako is a huge influence and a great bud so when he asked, woke up instantly from my cosmic hibernation and wanted to do a dj mix with some of the grooves I found lately. I don’t think I played any of those records out yet so was also an excitement of playing them for the first time. I hope to get a few 👌's 🤟's 🔥's 💥's. Ah wait …comments are off so probably not.

It is with enormous pleasure we present you our Mix Series instalment 4 by Patrick Poitz from Lize Records. 

As you all may have realised, on the bottom description for our mix series, we always include:

"The Toi Toi Mix Series do not follow any rules as in respect to which frequency it comes out, or if exclusive or not, dj set or live set or even, sets which we recorded at Toi.Toi. The rule here is 'free flow'." 

This mix comes out of exactly that. By traveling we tend to come across so many talents and amazing experiences that we wish that somehow we could show them to the world. This is an attempt. I spent 2 months in Berlin this summer and in my search for new and upcoming energy in the city I found it here, with The Lize boys. Extremely skilled, with amazing record collections and above all, know how to have fun while doing it, they gave me a real musical and human experience during my stay there so here, is a little piece of that journey brought to you by Patrick. 

Also, special thanks to Sebastian Rudolph (other half of Lize) and Club Der Visionaere for the great experiences we all had there.

Having upped this one to our Soundcloud late on Friday afternoon, it dropped just in time for the eagle eyed follower’s weekend enjoyment but it was just shy of the time required to present it proper, right here on this blog. So when we arrived to the office this Monday morning it was pretty neat to see the sentiments of respect and appreciation its weekend listeners have offered the mix’s creator, Eddie Richards, which we think does a neat service to the position he holds as an artist today. 'Evil' Eddie Richards is a proper Godfather figure to London's house scene and he remains a key player as resident at Nathan Coles and Terry Francis's celebrated Wiggle party. Owner of the recently reactivated imprint, Storm, Eddie also partners with Terry Francis for their regular Room Three takeover, Demo; a night of four four blended music created to showcase who they both see as the next wave of talent on the rise. 

The next Demo event is set to take place this coming Saturday night with Moon Harbour protégé, Sable Sheep  set to join them on the floor. So, seeing as we're also huge appreciators of what Richards does we thought it well timed to ask him to produce his own fabric x Demo Mix to hear what he’s filling his sets with at this point in time as well as some of the latest productions his has in store for release on Storm...
