Balamii

Lush atmospherics and rowdy dance floor favourites by two of Melbourne’s finest, Millú and Pjenné. These two sonic soulmates have been busy at work channeling their predilection for ethereal 90s electronica and meditative leftfield sounds with the start of their record label, Companion. Intrigued to hear more, we got in touch to get the low-down on the new project and life in Australia, among other things. Furthermore, they found a gap in their busy timetable and laid down a beautiful mix for us, which glides from contemplative mind soothers to fist-pumping party vibes in a seamless, 70-minute transmission.

Lee “Scratch” Perry - The Shaman of Sound, Original Rasta & Afro Futurist Left the Planet Earth.

He was one of the Giant and most influential musical mind of the 20th Century. In today’s world the word ‘innovator” somehow is attributed to a lot of artists and lost It’s original meaning, But Lee Perry was one of the truest one.

Starting out his career with Coxsone and Studio One and then Joe Gibbs he eventually set up his own “Upsetter” label and with his house band The Upsetters had much success and was instrumental in producing the early careers of many artists including U-Roy and Bob Marley & The Wailers in the late 60’s to early 70’s.
In ‘73 he built his own studio in his back yard called The Black Ark and with his innovative recording/mixing techniques became, and continues to be, one of the greatest and most influential pioneers of the musical genre known as Dub Reggae.

"Producer" as a concept was defined with his work experimenting on multitrack recordings.. Modern genres like hip hop dub or dance would not be the same if we never found his chaotic genius way of music in Jamaica.

First hour of this mix includes original compositions from Lee Perry & The Upsetters, second half of the mix includes music produced by Perry for other artists like: Junior Murvin, Max Romeo, Bob Marley ect.

Pat Brick aka DJ Life has been on a steady rise since his debut record released in 2019 with Echocentric Records, corresponding with the labels first release. The Aussie DJ and producer has since had a total of eight releases with prominent underground labels such as Dansu Discs, R.A.N.D. Muzik, and most recently, Lobster Theremin’s Distant Horizons sublabel. The energetic and fun take at combining prog, trance and techno has landed DJ Life’s name amongst the top in his league of sound.

We caught up with DJ Life on this edition of MIXED BY to discuss a bit about his music production, influences and the Australian underground dance music scene.

Hessle Audio welcomes Toumba to the label with the 4 track EP 'Petals'. Based in Amman, Jordan, Toumba explores Levantine microtonality, rhythms, play styles and timbres across the record. Lead track 'Istibtan' is a twist on a typical Jordanian wedding song with deep subs providing the foundations, complimented by crisp percussion and warm melodics.

Toumba is a producer, DJ and sound designer and is a curator at MNFA, a club and arts space in Jordan's capital Amman. A nationally respected artist, Toumba also holds a residency at the MMAG Foundation. The foundation works with a selection of the most gifted artists in the Levant, providing a space for artistic research, production and critical discourse.

Xi'an-born and Toronto-based producer, pianist, and DJ Ciel steps up for the next Phonica Mix with a slow building club room warm up. With a selection of deep and chugging bass, house and techno this is a mix that equally see itself lending its ears to the home listener as well as the club dancefloor frequenters. Its this diverse sound that has seen Ciel take the helms of some of the greatest clubs, festivals, radio shows and podcasts as well as releasing solid records on labels like Mister Saturday Night, Peach Discs, Coastal Haze and more her sound is truly solidified through these outputs. We are delighted to have Ciel join us ahead of some of her amazing shows this year like Kala Festival & Multi Multi(Where we will also be hosting a 20 Years Of Phonica Stage).
