Doing Time With Bill Spencer & Sholto

May 15th marks the birthdate of one of our favorite DJs - Roy Thode. Technically masterful, pioneering some of the most progressive methods in DJing whilst manifesting an exceptionally educated and tasteful selection of music, Roy Thode is truly an artist when it comes to the craft of DJing. Personally, as DJs, we've learned so much from listening to Roy Thode, 40 years later he continues to inspire us in such relevant ways. 

Roy Thode, a native New Yorker from Long Island, moved to the city in his early 20’s after establishing his DJ skills as a young man growing up in Wantaugh. Roy was perhaps best known for being the DJ for “Saturday Nights at the Ice Palace” in Cherry Grove. His NYC DJ career was highlighted with residencies at both Studio 54 and The Saint however it was the Long Island Gay club scene that fueled and created the foundation for Roy’s illustrious career as perhaps one of the best technical DJ’s of his era.

This mix was recorded at the Ice Palace - in many ways, his home. Being able to share this previously unreleased mix is a tremendous honor for us and we hope you can appreciate this as much as we do. A huge thank you to Marsha Stern for working with us and making this little project a reality.

For her Sunday Mix, Merlin pulls together feel-good tracks and roof-down bops from artists like Burna Boy, WizKid, Yussef Kamaal and Pip Millett. 

“This mix embodies what good moods, sunshine and summertime feel like,” she tells Crack Magazine over email. “A collection of some of my favourite earworms, ones that melt my ice cream and warm my soul.”

After living in Berlin for 3 years I finally decided to deal with the records I'd left in storage back in California. I ended up saving about 200 12"s/records/LPs and about 35/40 7"s and bringing them back with me.

I thought it would be a fun exercise to make a mix as I listened back to stuff I haven't heard in a while. This is that exercise (with only 7"s). No real agenda, just hit record and started playing some things. Hope you enjoy :)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Andrea for providing the way back to the late 90s Drum and Bass chill out zones! I always had (and still have) a very soft spot for dreamy D&B. And I always wanted to ask Andrea if he could provide a mix for the bin. He knows all these timeless D&B jams ... I know Andrea as an all areas music aficionado with a strong background in D&B. His credo "Deep, soulful wonderful music is what moves me. Tempo is irrelevant, the energy is what really counts”.
