This IS the sundown moment. The title reminds us of those evenings on the strip when you can see a thunderstorm far out to sea, sweeping in on the Island, whilst everything near you is a calm perfection. Nils Frahm spends a lot of time making soundtracks for film and TV.  His live performance here is one moment in time recorded and preserved, hiss and all, capturing that mesmerizing moment of a legendary sunset in Ibiza. There’s a certain sweet innocence to this tune. Scottish singer Samantha Whates, British producer Chris Coco and Belgian guitarist Nick Cornu combine to make a happy sad song about the end of the day, the end of the summer, the end of an affair. In Portuguese they have a word for this bitter sweet, warm, almost nostalgic feeling - saudade!

Japanese ambient house doesn't get much better than this. This cut was originally released on the La Ronde EP on BPM Records in 1991, and it continues to sound as wonderful as ever today (not to mention selling for a few hundred quid on discogs). This vibe of cool, uplifting house goes hand in hand with that twilight time after sunset, when the day bruises into darkness and the music builds for a wild night to come.

Cantoma is the brain child of Phil Mison, a DJ who has been involved in the downtempo scene for the last couple of decades, ever since he filled in on the decks at Cafe Del Mar for Jose Padilla. It features the vocals of New York City based singer / musician and ex-member of the Phenomenal Handclap Band, Bing Ji Ling. This tune is one of his most direct, polished compositions, and once it hooks you in it won't let you go.

Don Carlos is a seminal Italian DJ. His first single, Alone, released on Irma Records in 1991, is one of the greatest slabs of Italo House ever made. Here is one of his more atmospheric pieces updated by Enzo Elia. There’s a magical sound to this record: it's like wandering in the rain forest of your imagination.

Here Micko, a musician from Waterford, Ireland, works in collaboration with Chill out legend Afterlife. Early Afterlife tunes have soundtracked a gazillion Ibiza sunsets, so it was very important to us for his work to appear on this compilation.
We suggested to Afterlife that he have some fun in the studio and make a special edit for our collection, turning this from a cool, slightly rocky tune into a bona fide pre sundowner. Cue extra delays and effects, more Spanish guitar, and we have ourselves an exclusive beauty.

Tuccinelli is an enigmatic and reclusive producer from Naples, Italy who may or may not be a big house DJ too. Originally appearing on the highly revered Music For Dreams label, this track has a lovely timeless appeal: it has raw clubby undertones, but still maintains that airy, mellow feel that is so essential to great Balearic music.

Hedonistic club moments on a dance floor somewhere, with Someday or Sweet Harmony blasting, must have contributed to the writing of Sunburst. No surprise when you find out the Kid in this case is actually super producer Rui DaSilva and songwriter Danny De Matos in laid back mode. This is an alternative version of their album track, specially produced for this collection.

Every time we go to the pub we imagine the Zen Baboon: a hairy creature sitting quietly having a pint. If album decisions are becoming in any way serious, a quick glance at Zen for the imaginary wink gets us having a laugh and back to the creative enjoyment of making an exquisite compilation. As well as being our fictitious barfly, Zen Baboon is a musical duo from Portugal - Daniel is a sound engineer in a studio in Lisbon, and Henrique is a zoologist. For us La Maison Vert is reminiscent of that golden time of the early 2000 Chill out era. We adore it for that.

Nautic are a three piece from London who make what they describe as narrative heavy pop songs. This version of their song Freedom Of The Floor epitomises the sound of beach bars worldwide thanks to a bright daytime remix by Open Space, also known as Apiento from Balearic music & culture website Test Pressing, and Andrew Hale. Andy used to play with Sade back in the day, and that smooth 80s feel definitely sings through on this remix.

A.R.T Wilson, aka Andras Fox is a producer from Melbourne, Australia. This track was originally composed for the contemporary dance piece Overworld. It was released on a very limited pink cassette on Bandcamp, then picked up by Growing Bin who gave it the wider release it deserved on vinyl. It sounds like a live performance: there are imperfections for sure, but they’re a part of what makes this record truly special. The music says more than words ever could, or as A.R.T says on the cassette cover: the body says what words cannot. And, of course, on a proper Balearic album there has to be one track with waves on it. This is it.

Jonny is a mysterious character. We know that he has made music as part of Gaussian Curve and Land Of Light. We know he now lives in Bali. Beyond that, nothing is clear. This track is meditative, relaxing with a heady edge of electronica. Gigi Masin says it's music that has the power to make you dream eyes wide open. Peter our creative director has added, perhaps less poetically, that it reminds him of being battered on a beach after a heavy one. We think they’re both right.

Ruf Dug’s 2015 album Island landed out of nowhere, and was one of the biggest vinyl releases of the year. He recorded the whole thing in Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean, and you can hear the Compass Point and Wally Badarou influences all over it. This version strips away the beats but keeps the heart of the track with its dubby parts. It’s the ideal tune to lead you into the sundown zone.

The original Good Life, by Inner City was released in November 1988. It was one of the tunes of the summer of 89. Imagine that: the summer of love, outdoors at Ku, a golden sun rising. It’s still one of the biggest house anthems of all time: everybody knows and loves this tune.  

This version is destined for regular afternoon beach bar play. It comes courtesy of Eugene Tambourine, a DJ from New York City.

Dream Lovers is the mysterious project of a couple of bands who prefer to stay incognito. Brasil is a tropical-reggae disco-tinged Balearic shuffler evoking the feel of an afternoon on the beach: all loose percussion and soft guitar. It has a sound like nothing else - Brazil with a top notes of Hawaii – and it’s one we keep coming back to. A firm favourite.

Jacob is a Spanish guitar player from Denmark. He first met his soul mate, the Spanish guitar, in 2002 when he joined legendary Danish hippie group Savage Rose, and they’ve been global travelling companions ever since. 

Mexican Margarita is a classic in the making, one of those tunes that you feel like you already know on first listen. It’s such a civilised record: the atmosphere it creates is like an early morning café con leche at Croissant Show in Ibiza town, watching the crazy people pass by.

Laetitia Sadier is best known for her role as lead singer with seminal post-rock act Stereolab, so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear her singing on a great electro reggae tune. Perhaps this partnership encapsulates the Balearic spirit: carefree collaboration that shouldn’t work on paper, but makes magic in practice. From the moment we heard the opening line - Dazzling sun… sung by that gorgeous voice, we knew it was something special.

The best Balearic music is often made somewhere cold and far away from the islands that give it its name. This track was made by the mysterious A Vision Of Panorama at his studio in Russia, and we think it’s that very distance that gives this track its in-built existential longing. You can feel the need for sunshine and freedom in the grooves. It’s really become a go-to favourite for us, and it always seems to put a smile on people’s faces.

Stratus have crafted a classic soundtrack for lazy summer days. This tune is inspired by the intimate festivals held on the wooded bay on the edge of Tisno in Croatia, for which the song is named, but its feel is universal - the perfect accompaniment for a sundown anywhere in the world.

Coyote are kicking off 2017 in sharpish manner with this slow and dirty dance floor banger

Druggy Acid squelch and growling synths share a bar with a deep-south sound palette of live rocky drums and twangy guitars.

How to sum up this tune? Out of hours Nashville haunts and the clink of moonshine under the counter meet a 303 machine and the spirit of 90's Nottingham's Venus club in a drunk-driven Cadillac crash of pure Acid Hillbilly delight!

And feeling the low-slung guitar groove, the label's own Jim Breese swaps his A&R role for the mixing board to shift us into fifth gear for the Balearic dub. Everything gets simplified and darkened as a heady cocktail of Space Delay and swirling Analogue Reverb means the music cruises & flows like a midnight desert highway.

Yeehaw! for Coyote and Balearic on this one.

Non-conforming, we don’t give a damn aloofness… Welcome to The Madrigal.

This kooky tune was conceived in the smoke-filled uni-jam sessions of these two Irish mateys. Inspired by their youthful view on the world, they marched to the beat of their own drum to make something truly special. 

The result is an earthy mixture of ethereal Celtic flutes bleeding into hazy Middle Eastern melodies, all underlaid with hard and heavy drums. This is the kind of kaleidoscopic mix of sounds heard back in the day at the sunsets of the Cafe Del Mar Ibiza. You can almost see the light on the water, taste the cocktails and feel that magical vibe…

And it might never have come to light if destiny hadn't stepped in, reuniting the boys - a little wiser, even more widely travelled - to recapture the magic together, now, some twenty years later

And the dub… Welcome to the jungle, dark, deep, and vibrant - just waiting to be explored.  

Label head Jim Breese deconstructed this mesmerising tune and fed their heady beats into FX units and delays. He recorded the twisted sounds that came snarling out, and after one long session of expression and experimentation he found sense in the madness and built this gloriously dark and trippy Balearic Dub from the ground up.  

Tribal beats play with percussive bass tones. Wild rhythms grow amongst swelling congas. This is the perfect tune to get lost in.

There are a lot of memories in Sunflower, a lot of good times.

So sit back, close your eyes, and dream...

Few tunes conjure up an atmosphere as perfectly as this one: wallowing in the Spring, getting sloshed!

Rich smouldering vocals float by as Celtic melodies strum on playful guitars. Hawaiian slide notes shine against a dark undercurrent of growling synths. Dreamy lyrics effortlessly walk the line between the dark and comical. 

Nothing else we’ve heard sounds quite like this... it’s musical soul food.

And the dream just got darker in the Dub. Jim Breese has stripped everything back to its absolute heady essentials. The glorious vocals have been burnished and stretched out, the gaps between the words left yawning wide enough to fall into. The groove has slackened even further, it’s opened up, and deepened. There's something almost sinister here... This is music pouring through from another dimension.

The Madrigal have got Spring all fathomed out; lets drink some wine and waste some time – sounds like heaven to us.

If New York’s Roxy nightclub emerged from the colourful blocks of Brazil, there's no doubt these tracks would be the carnival sound clash heard on hard rotation. Brooklyn percussionist Eugene Tambourine, aka The Lemko Unlimited Orchestra, has created new renditions of disco hits, giving them the rhythmic going over they didn’t know they needed. It’s the artist’s tale of NYC clubbing in the 1980’s, infused with a raucous, fiery Latin attitude. A package expertly mixed by Darshan Jesrani.

‘Pathways’ is a mashup, interpolating hooks from Fingers Inc’s ‘A Path’ in clever combinations with Ralph Macdonald’s much sampled ‘The Path.’

You’ll no doubt recognise ‘K.G.E.T.’ from the original ‘K-Jee’ funk bomb by The Nite-Liters in 1971, later covered famously by MFSB. Eugene updates the tune with disco-era style, flowing live and carrying the torch onwards from the bands back in the day.

Stripped back ‘Versions’ have been recorded of both tracks, giving you raw drums & acidic brawn. These are dj dubs focused on the dance floor, the real deal from The Lemko Unlimited Orchestra on Balearic.

Twilight, the collaboration of Clandestino’s Nick J Smith and Breese. North and South unites for some top-drawer Balearica.
 
We see Smith's musicality shine in the original - the bass throbs whilst arpeggios ebb & flow, acid lines pulsing in unison as Breese's relentless drums crackle like distant lightning. The tune moves at a hypnotising pace, drawing you out from the poolside and into a stormy desert dusk.
 
Forward to the remix - an intense ride for the house fans. Voodoo textures conjure bones rattling on string, weirding-up the mix, all set against epic crescendos plunging into wild drops that keep the crowd moving to a deep, driving beat. It's obvious Breese isn't here to mess about, he's here to smash in the dance floor.
