From BALLROOM MARFA DJ CAMP 2021 from #CVCATX: “Austin’s DJ Raquiqui, Cienfuegos and Pinche Juan had a blast teaching Marfa’s kids how to drop a needle and make a smooth transition. For the final mix, our little DJs picked their own vinyl and came up with a progression of tunes to put together. This is the final outcome of Ballroom Marfa’s DJ Camp 2021.

About BALLROOM MARFA DJ CAMP 2021: From JUNE 28 - JULY 1, Ballroom Marfa and Marfa ISD hosted a vinyl-only workshop led by the DJs of Chulita Vinyl Club ATX for Marfa students in grades five through eight. The Summer Shake Up DJ Camp was designed to engage the imagination of youth from all musical backgrounds and participants were encouraged to use found music and images to create their own narratives, celebrating personal history and cultural exploration. 

Throughout the week, students learned and practiced beat-matching, mixing, scratching, and more. While offering practical experience with turntables and vinyl records, CVC ATX presented DJing as an art form with a rich culture and history with portions of each class covering the history of DJ culture, music collectives, basic music theory, and an introduction to zine-making to help promote their DJ persona.

La música Ecuatoriana siempre ha sido algo muy especial para mí. Cada vez que descubro una canción, un nuevo estilo o un disco de un artista Ecuatorianx me enamoro más y más de la cultura que me ha dado tanto. 

Hice esta mezcla para mí amigo Angelo Baque, artista y diseñador en Nueva York fundador de AWAKE una empresa de ropa. Angelo es Ecuatoriano nacido en la YONI como yo! :) 

Estoy siempre en la búsqueda de artistas nacidos en Estados Unidos con padres Ecuatorianos. Cuando nos encontramos nos quedamos hablando de nuestra juventud, la cultura que compartimos y todo lo que trae ser hijos de Ecuatorianos. La curiosidad es una de las cosas que tenemos en común, son las ganas de buscar más historias de música y arte en el Ecuador y su diáspora. Aquí les comparto esta mezcla para que otros jóvenes hijos de Ecuatorianos en el mundo pueden conocer el Ecuador y sus raíces a través esta música. 

Las canciones que están en esta mezcla son de todo un poco, quiero compartir las cosas que me han inspirado a continuar corriendo desde mi curiosidad.

La portada son dibujos que hizo el artista Ecuatoriano León Ricaurte como parte de su libro Diseños Pre Hispánicos del Ecuador. De joven mis primos eran amigos de Leon y su familia. Siempre andábamos en su casa en Chipipe mirando sus pinturas y paseando en la playa que quedaba al final de la calle.

Music from Ecuador has always been special for me. Every time I find a new song or album I fall deeper in love with this culture that has given me so much. I made this mix for my friend Angelo Baque who is an artist, designer and owner of AWAKE. He’s Ecuadorian American like me. :)

Im always looking and meeting artists that are Ecuadorian American and we’re always sharing so many similar stories about our upbringing through our parents culture and how it felt living and growing up in the USA. Our eagerness to find more visual and sound/music work from Ecuador is always so deep. My hope is to continue these conversations through posting these mixes and more!

Thank you to Daniel Lofredo Rota (Quixosis) for sharing his wealth of knowledge with me and Sofia Bastidas for helping out with words and friendship.

The cover art is by León Ricaurte from his book Diseños Pre Hispanics del Ecuador. I remember hanging with my cousins who were friends with his family at Leon’s house looking at his paintings, eating food and hanging by the beach in Chipepe. <3

Ecuador Love 1 - DJ mix de Helado Negro

“Sounds for Thalweg Flag” is a sound piece made for "Thalweg Flag" by Lisa Alvarado in Ballroom Marfa's current exhibition, 'unFlagging.'

This piece was created by Natural Information Society, an ensemble founded by Joshua Abrams that features Alvarado on harmonium. The sound work, which includes newly composed, improvised and found sound, builds from components of “Thalweg Sounds,” a composition developed for Alvarado’s solo exhibition Thalweg at the Bridget Donahue Gallery in Summer 2020. With “Sounds for Thalweg Flag” Alvarado considers a liminal space, a fluid pathway of shifting water and sediment where layers of memory continuously mix and reconfigure.

Ballroom Marfa is an internationally recognized non-collecting contemporary art museum located in Marfa, a rural town of less than 2,000 people in Far West Texas. Established in 2003 by Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn, our contemporary art and performance space is housed in a 1920s-era ballroom and is free and open to the public. With generous support from individuals and foundations, Ballroom commissions new site-specific and site-inspired projects and gives artists and musicians the opportunity to engage with the magnificent landscape of the Big Bend.
