As part of 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 : 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, composer Raven Chacon debuted a new sound-work on Alcatraz on November 6, 2022. The work is a sonic meditation on the histories of the island and its occupation for nineteen months beginning in November 1969 by the group Indians of All Tribes, as a protest regarding civil rights abuses at that time. The sound piece draws upon many sources, including archival sound footage of Radio Free Alcatraz, which broadcast news of the occupation from the island every weeknight for most of the first year of the protest. Choosing the former hospital wing as the site of the performance, Chacon is interested in excavating the layered violent histories on the island while in a space formerly dedicated to healing and repair.

Raven Chacon: Live from Alcatraz

Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory is the first retrospective exhibition of the work of longtime Bay Area artist Mesa-Bains. Presenting work from the entirety of her career for the first time, this exhibition, which features nearly 60 works in a range of media, including fourteen major installations, celebrates Mesa-Bains’s important contributions to the field of contemporary art locally and globally.

The UC Berkeley Department of German and BAMPFA are pleased to host Werner Herzog’s Mosse Lecture. The author of more than a dozen books of prose, Herzog reads from the long-awaited Every Man for Himself and God Against All: A Memoir (Penguin Random House, October 10, 2023) and engages in conversation with Deniz Göktürk, Professor of German and Film at UC Berkeley.

The annual lecture is generously supported by the Mosse Foundation and reflects the foundation’s mission to promote cultural exchange and political engagement. The Mosse Lectures were originally founded in 1997 at Humboldt University in Berlin to commemorate the history of the Mosse family, their patronage of the arts, and their contributions to intellectual life through the German-Jewish publishing house run by Rudolf Mosse and the newspaper Berliner Tageblatt.
