This is so fine, tasteful and energetic, translucent and dense, fragile and strong! I learn so much just hearing your music, zhank you!

The four tracks that comprise GIVING WATER TO THE DEAD were composed using sound materials originally recorded for the sound installation Histories of the Present, a public artwork commissioned by the City of Berkeley in 2019. But where the installation was about a melding of practices and sounds into a single gesture, Crouch and Novak wanted to take the opportunity of a split release to exploring divergent paths starting from common ground. For GIVING WATER TO THE DEAD, each artist started with the same source material and plotted their own direction without direct influence from the other.  As artists in a relationship and sharing a studio this was no easy feat. Despite the planned divergence the resulting tracks compliment each other, as the artists do.

I wanted to create tracks that implied motion, but a subtle motion in otherwise stillness, like the illusion of fluidity in a heat haze. Mostly, I wanted to make an album of unhurried music that was happy taking its time, each track existing in the moment, slowing up and speeding down.

Context: This is sacred music of the cult of Ryangombe, a legendary hero whose adherents had to undergo initiation rites. Here, a group of men sing of the Umuhara – spirits – in a song that was never performed outside of its ritual context so as not to risk the wrath of the spirits.

DISSOLUTION B

This is an excerpt of the first of two improvised concerts given at Aqtushetii in the village of Omalo in the northern Tusheti region of Georgia, deep in the Caucasus mountains. It's played on a Prophet synthesizer in a tuning I got from Kraig Grady, which is called Sisiutl. A 12 tone 11-limit self mirroring scale in just intonation. A Centaur-like scale with 11s instead of 5s. The other sounds are grass hoppers I had recorded in the field below us during the day, as well as some looped contact mic'd instruments also made that day. A metal barrel suspended from a ceiling beam and metal spring strung between two nails on a board (built with the help of some enthusiastic locals and played with mallets).
