Nick Boyd - Live at The Carry Nation (9/10/22)

Since the pandemic and the murder of George Floyd, there have been renewed efforts to shine a light on dance music's roots in Black communities. Still, there's a critical need for more Black-forefronted collectives and programmers—as well as more thoughtfully curated and balanced rosters of talent in clubs and festivals—to keep the origins of electronic music alive. 

In comes Brooklyn’s dweller festival, founded in 2019 by Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, which aims to highlight exclusively Black talent from across the globe. This year’s edition featured a live RA Exchange with Nigerian-British selector OK Williams, who spoke to RA music critic Kiana Mickles about some of the deep-rooted inequities that continue to bar Black artists from contributing to the contemporary dance music landscape. They also discuss Williams’ ascent on the global stage—beginning from her Early Bird residency at NTS and full-fledged touring career post-pandemic—and her first forays into production. This is a lively discussion that includes questions from the audience. Listen to the episode in full.

"A mostly vinyl mix in effort to highlight the Deep House/US Garage style of House Music and the artist and labels who pioneered the sound. The term Garage most commonly associated with UK Garage is actually rooted in New York’s Paradise Garage and was a marketing term created to distinguish NY/NJ House from the sounds coming out of Chicago and Detroit. Swung beats, pretty chords and huge diva vocals were common elements of a NY/NJ House track. More rooted in Jazz, Soul and R&B than the edgy futuristic sounds of Chicago and Detroit. Producers like Masters at Work, Mood II Swing and Kerri Chandler were some at the forefront of the sound as well as unsung heroes like Blaze or Victor Simonelli. New York had a strong independent record label culture that goes back to the disco era of the 70s. Before the advent of the digital era and the devaluation of music, independent record labels were able to thrive. Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Kult and Eight Ball records were among the many labels pushing the NY/NJ sound. 90s New York and New Jersey club music were inseparable up until the BMORE influenced Jersey Club sounds of the 2000’s.

New York and New Jersey have such a rich history of Club Culture and Dance/Electronic Music. It’s unfortunate how little education there is on the topic. Yes, House Music was pioneered in Chicago but New York and New Jersey have always had their own thing going on and played a huge role in the development of the genre and culture. This style/era of house could not possibly be encapsulated in a 1 hour mix but these are some of my favorite tracks that I’ve collected over the years."  

DONIS pronounced (DAH-NIS) is a Dominican American DJ/Producer born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Their style is rooted in their city’s rich club culture history, often paying homage to the sounds of New York’s golden era. Equally versed in playing contemporary styles of club music as well, they mix US regional styles with Afro Latin/Caribbean sounds like Dembow and Afro House. They have become well known in the underground scene playing parties for Papi Juice, Boiler Room, Dweller Festival and regularly playing at local venues like Lebain, Elsewhere and Paragon. They recently worked as Music Supervisor for Head of State’s FW23 fashion show, scored 2 ads for Telfar and have been shelling their residency at renowned club Nowadays.

Zarina (Sarah Zarina Hakani) is a Shi'a Muslim multidisciplinary artist from Atlanta, GA, based in Brooklyn, NY. From MoMA PS1 to her friends' backyards, Zarina keeps things warm and playful through her hometown selections, blissed-out vocals, and unpredictable explosions.  

Recorded during Ramadan, this mix holds the complexity, nostalgia, and future-building power of the month. Zarina blends genres with power and purpose. Expect some electro, hard drums, bollywood, breaks, and more as you traverse through a soundscape that calls to the hypnotic stillness, textured reflection, and wacky celebration leading up to Eid. 

Zarina volunteers with @8ballcommunity, is the artist-in-residence at @risolab, co-founded @reconstructedmag, and a partner in party series @lifesavers_nyc.
