Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. A quiet dancer who uses music to connect with others. 

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene? 
A. About 12 years as a dancer but 6 years as a dj. (I was a curious kid who stayed in the street)

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix is a little rude, sticky but sweet. I wanted to pull elements from my queer haitian identity and experiences as an NYC native. A lot of the tracks selected are from DJs and artists I look up to. The grooves, syncopation and cuts I mix are to paint a picture of it being 2am in the club, you are pumping & dancing so hard that you are sweating your hair and clothes out but you can’t stop because the music feels too good. In my own way if I was old enough to play at sound factory or the tunnel, this is what it would sound like!

An Ohio-born, Detroit-based DJ, writer, and self described technomusicologist, DJ Etta occupies most of her time scheming with her crew Blueprint, curating mixes for Moods, working as a tour guide at Exhibit 3000, or documenting the impact of black women in dance music. Her sets take a free form approach, basking in unabashed joyfulness untethered to genre.

"A mostly vinyl mix in effort to highlight the Deep House/US Garage style of House Music and the artist and labels who pioneered the sound. The term Garage most commonly associated with UK Garage is actually rooted in New York’s Paradise Garage and was a marketing term created to distinguish NY/NJ House from the sounds coming out of Chicago and Detroit. Swung beats, pretty chords and huge diva vocals were common elements of a NY/NJ House track. More rooted in Jazz, Soul and R&B than the edgy futuristic sounds of Chicago and Detroit. Producers like Masters at Work, Mood II Swing and Kerri Chandler were some at the forefront of the sound as well as unsung heroes like Blaze or Victor Simonelli. New York had a strong independent record label culture that goes back to the disco era of the 70s. Before the advent of the digital era and the devaluation of music, independent record labels were able to thrive. Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Kult and Eight Ball records were among the many labels pushing the NY/NJ sound. 90s New York and New Jersey club music were inseparable up until the BMORE influenced Jersey Club sounds of the 2000’s.

New York and New Jersey have such a rich history of Club Culture and Dance/Electronic Music. It’s unfortunate how little education there is on the topic. Yes, House Music was pioneered in Chicago but New York and New Jersey have always had their own thing going on and played a huge role in the development of the genre and culture. This style/era of house could not possibly be encapsulated in a 1 hour mix but these are some of my favorite tracks that I’ve collected over the years."  

DONIS pronounced (DAH-NIS) is a Dominican American DJ/Producer born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Their style is rooted in their city’s rich club culture history, often paying homage to the sounds of New York’s golden era. Equally versed in playing contemporary styles of club music as well, they mix US regional styles with Afro Latin/Caribbean sounds like Dembow and Afro House. They have become well known in the underground scene playing parties for Papi Juice, Boiler Room, Dweller Festival and regularly playing at local venues like Lebain, Elsewhere and Paragon. They recently worked as Music Supervisor for Head of State’s FW23 fashion show, scored 2 ads for Telfar and have been shelling their residency at renowned club Nowadays.

They explore a combination of Trans-Atlantic styles ranging from Deep House to Techno, Disco and Dembow. They have become well known in the New York underground scene playing parties for Papi Juice, Boiler Room, Dweller Festival and regularly playing at local venues like Lebain, Elsewhere and Paragon. They have most recently worked as Music Supervisor for Head of State’s FW23 fashion show, scored 3 ads for Telfar, self released their debut EP Metamorphosis01 and has been shelling their residency at world renowned club Nowadays.
