Nick’s devotion to dance music is clear through his residencies on The Lot Radio and Newtown Radio, his work during lockdown co-running Bossa Nova Civic Club’s weekly stream series Bossa Radio, and his dance music criticism and interviews for Love Injection, Crack Magazine, The Fader, Bolting Bits…

"I’ve been finding a ton of joy in like deep wonked out psychedelic slammin jack tracks lately ! I really love everyone at XOXA and am so happy to contribute to this series so I wanted to translate some of that kind of bleery eyed weak knees joy that only house can give me for this mix. Tried to not overthink it which made for some nice happy accidents like playing both the a & b side of that DJ Pierre/Phortune record and that stretch of three tracks with “The Beginning” in their titles that happens in middle of the mix. Probably played more than like like 5 tracks that I would consider to be huge classics in my own musical life as well as a cuts from a lot of the folks I hold super close to my heart making an appearance — Stevie Wonder, David Morales, Spencer Kincy, Ali Berger, Grant Nelson… This wacky voodoo ray remix I just found… The original mix was the first track I played in my first DJ set on a roof at a Sorry Records party a long time ago. There’s a bit where I got way too carried away with the Din Daa Daa “dah!” sample from congo d max mix lol that was my little Junior Vasquez drama big room moment !! Btw Junior did the mix on that Angel track I played too. There’s a nod to the motherbeat with the Slits cut as well <3 Oh also thank you Tony G for ripping that record and the E-Culture cut for me as well as Rave Cafe’s Disco Smile and Dalton Saffe for letting me record this at their house and cooking a beautiful dinner!! - couldn’t have done it without em <3 “

CLUBCAST 069 DJ Anarres GUEST MIX 04/18/22

A few years ago, US DJ and producer C Powers made an offhand comment to me on Twitter about their drag background. I was intrigued and asked for more info, and they told me that they had DJed for the “trashtastic” House of Gunt for half a decade before moving from Savannah, GA, to the west coast (they’re currently based in Portland, following a stint in LA). A long time later, I asked them if they’d be interested in doing a mix in the spirit of the House, and after several months of hard work it's here. It’s been worth the wait. To go back to Gunt, you may be familiar with the concept of Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent, made famous by Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Gunt sidesteps away from the glamour towards Garbage, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talons. Their own description for me reads as follows:

Drop dead scandals from subterranean sutures in middle crust’s culture killing sabotage seek bittersweet repentance.

There’s an interview with the queens here (https://www.wussymag.com/all/garbage-uniqueness-nerve-and-talons-house-of-gunts-southern-swamp-legacy), where they discuss their “southern swamp legacy” (ironically featured in a magazine with Drag Race winner Sasha Velour on the cover).

Outside of music, Cici has been heavily active in anti-displacement work in recent years. When they moved to LA in 2019, they joined the Los Angeles Tenants Union, helping working class and undocumented families organise against unethical landlords and gentrification in North Hollywood. Upon moving to Portland a year later, they became a co-founding member of Don’t Evict Portland, a tenant-lead organisation that is working to build tenant power and delay, reduce, or eliminate the harm and violence of eviction. Their work in the real world blends into their work as an electronic musician and deejay.

The mix is positively uproarious, with themed sections (just look at the tracklist) brought together by some true musicianship and skills, all interspersed with live recordings from a night at Gunt. We’ve got classic acid, Bmore, vogue, club music and even a rare collaboration from Towa Tei and Kylie Minogue. This one puts the dirt in get down and dirty. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Play the music that lifts you up and it's going to lift up other people. Have a personal hype song or 2. i.e. If I get anxious for some reason before or mid-set, I'll often whip out Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" to lift me out of that weird place of self doubt. Self doubt is the enemy.
