New Delhi bass champion Nucleya delivers a slickly produced Mumbahton banger. Bant Singh's voice is harmonized, used as a lead, and transformed into an air horn above window rattling bass and a hard hitting dancefloor drums.

Nucleya is founded by Udyan Sagar, who started his musical journey towards the end of 1990's when he co-founded Bandish Projekt. Since then, he has released 14 Singles, two studio album including Bhor and numerous collaborations. There are 4 more international releases lined up for this year. Nucleya has frequently made it on the playlists of BBC Radio 1 -- UK and numerous other radio stations around the world. He has performed at numerous prestigious festivals and events around the world, like Glastonbury -- UK, Edinburgh Fringe Festival -- UK, Lille 3000 France etc.

He is currently based in Delhi, India and is very happy about the response he received for his album with HMV India. The album consists of bass heavy mash-ups of old Bollywood tracks, with collaborations featuring artists like Piyush Bhatnagar
(Ex- Deaf Bass Twins from India) and MC JD from Canada and Shivang Patel from Ahmedabad.

Over past many years, Nucleya has also composed and produced music for films. He has produced original sound tracks and background scores for feature films like "Dubai Return", short animations, as well as ad films. He has worked with brands like Tata and presently designing a background score for an animation film by a student of National Institute of Design, India. Nucleya will be playing at Electron Festival on 22 April, 2011 in Geneva.

Dr Das's massive of a remix stars a filthy swerving bass . Relentless Indian percussion, reverberated drum hits, and synth-ska stabs circle around the voices of Bant Singh and Delhi Sultanate in a dub-noise tornado.

Dr Das is a bassist, performer, composer, producer, remixer and programmer. He was one of the founder members and original bassist of Asian Dub Foundation (ADF) where he established his reputation for playing deep, melodic and cyclical basslines.

Since leaving ADF in 2006, he has returned to his roots in experimental dub. His sound, combining dub with noise, takes its inspiration from the distorted rhythms of Muslimgauze, the percussive minimalism of 23 Skidoo and the dark funk-noise grooves of 70s Miles Davis. The work of Scientist and earlier more abstract On-U Sound recordings are also an inspiration as well as more recently, Rhythm & Sound and UR/Intersteller Fugitives.

Where Did the Night Go - Gill Scott-Heron- (Zupany HTc tribute re-work)

'War Dance' on Stephen Marley's Bongo Nya riddim begins with a sample of the legendary Indo-Jamaican artist Super Cat. Cat, in a conversation with Chin, gives a mystical history of how drum beats played by slaves and native Indians metaphorphed over the years into dancehall and studio riddims. Cat in his speech conflates East Indians and First Nation Indians of the Americas. The Bongo Nya riddim kicks in and provides the perfect bass for Delhi Sultanate's lyrics evoking images of a post apocalyptic Indigenous people's war dance.

War Dance (Bongo Nya)

‘Lighters Up’ is a re-lick of Major Lazer’s tune for Snoop Lion, by London based producer Tramendas. Begum X sings harmonies on the Chorus ‘today not tomorrow’ while Delhi Sultanate’s verses contain multiple references to colonial history, from the 1857 uprising in India to the killing of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011. The Gaddafi reference echoes a classic Dancehall song by Indo-Jamaican artist Super Cat released in 1984. For these lines Delhi Sultanate borrows Cat's pattern of the 1984 classic ‘Under Pressure’ where Cat pays homage to the Libyan leader and proponent of pan Africanism.

Today not Tomorrow (Lighters Up)

'No capitalists shall escape' opens with a sample from Chronixx, prophesizing that in the near future all youths will grow up as revolutionaries. Stephen Marley's rockstone beat kicks in over analogue dub siren sounds and we hear the sampled voice of Johnny Clarke 'No Capitalists Shall Escape in this time'. Reminding listeners of the original source of Stephen Marley's riddim. The Johnny Clarke line is taken from a dubplate he voiced for Bass Foundation Roots. Interestingly, while the original lyrics to his famous song ' None Shall Escape' do not mention the word 'capitalists' anywhere, a lesser known dub version by King Tubby exists that contains different lyrics. Clarks voice comes in only briefly in the militant dub mix of this track, yet his words are straight to the point. Instead of his usual 'none shall escape' you can clearly hear him say ' No Capitalists Shall Escape' - pointing to the existence of alternate vocal takes of this great roots classic.

As the beat kicks in Delhi Sultanate begins his verse, riddled with references to colonial history and metaphors of disease ala 'small pox blankets' and dubplate boxes full of 'black bacteria'. Johnny Clarke's voice returns once more in the break down before Begum X takes over the rest of the song with her heavy blues style delivery written by her after she spent an afternoon reading Frantz Fanon's 'Wretched of the Earth'

‘Bon Dem Again’ employs Damien Marley’s ‘As We Enter’ riddim. Of all the songs on the EP ‘Bon Dem Again' contains the clearest musical connection to Africa. Damien Marley rebuilt a song originally created by Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke, titled Yègellé Tezeta. ‘Bon Dem Again’ was first created as a dubplate for London based producer Jstar, the lyrics are a mix of sound clash bravado and revolutionary references. Salu Majhi is a blind bard and is one of the few living kui dundka singers in the area. His improvised songs are treasures of the oral history of kui and the challenges that his community have faced through centuries. Among several things that he sings about, some of the recurrent themes are the lives of kui people, the plight and joys of being a kondha, their gods, and the territory that kuis have inherited from their ancestors. He composes songs using the one string dundka, borrowing generously from the singers before him and the rich singing tradition of the kui people. His songs acquire a mythic life of their own, as he sings about a past that resonates vibrantly with contemporary times - a time when the community struggles to find its place as the extractive giant of Utkal Alumina initiates its operations.

Like many in Kucheipadar, Lima Majhi joined the movement as a young boy. Unlike Bhagbana, he does not come from a family of dhundka singers. Lima is very popular in the village and a good mobiliser among the womenfolk and the youth. He dedicated his life to the struggle and when the movement was at its height, he was a part of the core group that decided on the course of action and organised events.

Lima’s song, Zamin Chori ba nahi is one of two songs written by Bhagbana Majhi. Movement songs were not only sung by a few specialists, but had become part of a common voice. This song, originally written in the primary phase of the movement, asserts that unity is strength and that people must be unified across the villages. One of Lima’s lines that reads, ‘immortal nectar will be turned into poison’, can be interpreted on many levels. Bauxite rock formed over 40 million years can be demolished and turned into aluminium within decades.

Blood Earth - Poison

This song is a Word Sound Power reworking of ‘dongora chadiba nai’. The original song in Oriya was composed and written by Bhagbana Majhi who comes from a family of dundka singers and is one of the most charismatic leaders in the anti-mining movement against Utkal Alumina. The song was first penned down in the mid-nineties and quickly became very popular. It was sung at meetings, gatherings and rallies. Bhagbana often laces his speeches with movement songs. At the young age of twelve he immersed himself in the movement, mounting posters in several villages and accompanying the activists as they visited villages to mobilize people. One of his favorite activities as a teenager, he recalls, was to  grade activist speakers who were giving rousing speeches with marks from 1-10. Small wonder he learnt the ropes through observation and emerged as one of the most articulate speakers that south Orissa peoples movements has produced. Bhagbana is a charismatic performer and has the ability to hold audiences spellbound through his speeches and songs. His songs speak about the unity of peasant communities in the area, their history, their strength and the threat of foreign companies. His songs are full of optimism and a strong will to survive such adversity. Today as the area braces the company, and the people uncertain of their future, hope against hope, that they may secure a ‘decent life’, the voice of Bhagbana transcends as the conscience-keeper of the community.

Blood Earth - Unity

A few months prior to our arrival, a police shooting had taken place in Basangmali, about 30 kilometers from Kucheipadar. A fact finding commission later confirmed, that the police had opened fire on a number of boys and girls who were part of a cultural troupe, who were visiting the nearby villages, performing revolutionary songs and dances. While the group was associated with the Naxal movement, they had clearly not been involved in any armed activity. No warnings or calls to surrender were given. In total, nine people, five of them minor girls, lost their lives.
 
With the peaceful democratic movement being suppressed, there is now some Naxal presence in the area. This has made it much easier for anyone, who is associated with any form of dissent, to be branded as a Naxal and thus Bhagbana has also been accused of being linked to rebel guerrillas.  In villages like Barigaon, Peepalpadar, Sunger and others, the paramilitary is known to have entered homes, threatened families with guns, taunted them and accused the well-built youth among them of being naxals, without the slight of evidence. This has severely affected freedom of movement and the ability to exercise their rights for peaceful political resistance. The possibility of arrest or worse, has become ever present. 

Among the many who had been falsely accused and had to spent time in prison was Maharaj Majhi - a dignified school teacher who walked from village to village in the early days and was instrumental in starting the movement. 

The song also mentions Shivram whom we met in a nearby village called Maikanch. Shivram had been present at the notorious 16th December shooting of 2000, when police opened fire on unarmed protesters for the first time. He escaped wounded, but later spent 13 months in prison on trumped up charges. Like many, he has been accused of being linked to the Naxal movement and police harassment and possible arrest have become a fact of life for him. Halfway through our meeting an informer disrupted our conversation and started an argument. We came to know that police had been informed of our presence and decided to leave in order to not cause further trouble to Shivram.

Blood Earth (Back Against the Wall) is the first collaboration between Jazzsteppa and the Word Sound Power collective.

Word Sound Power is a trust dedicated to collaboration with revolutionary singers and musicians across India. Blood Earth is Word Sound Power's second project, recorded in Kucheipadar, a tribal village in Odisha that has been the site of an intense and prolonged conflict and home to a rich musical tradition.

Jazzsteppa's remix (and IPhone App) combines the lyrics of Delhi Sultanate, the mixing of Vienna based dubstep trio Atomique, the rhythm section of Israeli dub outfit Zvuloon Dub System and the video work of Kush Badhwar.
