Brain Damage meets Vibronics
"Empire soldiers"

Vibronics & Brain Damage teamed up and decided to come together around a concept, a narrative inspiration that will undoubtedly surprise: Anglo-Caribbean and Franco-African soldiers’ experience during the first world war. 
The academic historian, poet & songwriter, Madu Messenger, uses the product of years of study and research, to develop, within that very framework, a series of texts on some key topics such as travel, friendship, war and death. This project thus aims at offering a learning experience about this often little-known period of our history. 
It will draw troubling parallels with some more contemporary considerations on culture shocks, immigration, imperial powers and horrors of war that still affects all of us today. Following their reflection on this sensitive issue, the musicians of the project’s – all of many other origins, Anglo-French, Jamaican or Asian – move towards a cultural alignment, opposite to certain enslaving and communitarian models.

‘In the belly of the beast man a soldier’ are MC Ishu’s lyrics that gave this ska inspired riddim track its name. It is now 10 years since Scotch Bonnet’s first ever release that featured Mungo’s Hi Fi’s Belly Ska riddim. It proved to be a massive hit with music lovers with countless artists recorded their own vocals and dubplates over it - Luciano uses it as the closing track for his shows. We have resisted countless calls for a repress until now. This release features two new 7 inches, one with Marina P’s ‘Divorce a l’italienne’ and Ranking Joe’s ‘I love Jah’ which were originally out on 10”, plus previously unreleased ‘Gideon boot’ by General Levy featuring an instrumental with boosted sub on the b-side. 

This is a limited issue repress brought out to celebrate Record Store Day 2015, as well as the 10th anniversary of Scotch Bonnet Records.

Back in the day, around '81/'82, Sister Nancy (Ophlin Russell-Myers) recorded a tune on the Stalag riddim - the seminal Bam Bam. Since then I've played it to death be it in clubs and pubs, at home, or in the car on a sunny Irish country road with the top down. 
Around 15 years ago a big beat remix turned up and went straight into my DJ bag often to be played with, instead of, or cut over the original. And that's all I've done here, put a big fuck off beat over Soom T's cut. Same riddim, fresh vocal, new generation. The circles and cycles of reggae and dancehall move ever far-ward. 

Ophlin Russell-Myers, meanwhile .. she's now an accountant in a bank .... pfft.
