Though very much part of the lo-fi techno movement of recent years, Florian Kupfer’s past includes six years as a soprano choir boy. As such it is no surprise there is a real sense of enchanting grace to his work, which most often comes on LIES, but also on Russian Torrent Versions and Wille Burns’ W.T. Records. Whether mechanical and menacing or sombre and heartbreaking, his grainy grooves always manage to cast a spell on the dance floor. 

The mix he serves up here makes scant use of drums, especially early on where lingering piano solos, looming ambience and foreboding acoustic guitars add up to something incredibly powerful despite being so sparse. Grinding drums and malfunctioning synths eventually take over and work to soundtrack a desolate industrial space where all traces of humanity have long gone. It’s bleak but beautiful, much like everything to which Kupfer puts his name.

At a very young age, @ingamauer was hooked on the frequencies of Bunker Records, Trax and Underground Resistance, developing a musical taste that ranges from industrial, techno and EBM to New Wave and Disco.

In her current hometown of St Petersburg, she is a resident DJ of the city’s most famous club @stackenschneider, but it is not enough for a curious soul like Inga, so she set out to explore the World.

Since 2014 she has broadcast her very own “Bon Voyage” radio show on Radio @comeme and as a DJ she already captivated dancers at famed clubs such as Salon Des Amateurs, Robert Johnson and De School.

Furthermore, in late 2016 she debuted as a producer with her first release “From Cologne To Clone” at HVNX, a subdivision of John Talabot’s acclaimed Hivern Discs label. This was recently followed by another dark arresting techno not techno EP on Shtum, the sublabel of Uncanny Valley from Dresden.

Before Inga Mauer takes off big time, she has prepared a mix for the EDWIN Music Channel that does not curry favour with all dancer’s guilty feeds. Instead she melts experimental music by Bourbonese Qualk and De Fabriek with organic ambient tracks from O Yuki Conjugate and drum machine gospel from Otis G. Johnson. A surprising, deep emotional trip that shows her skills as an unforeseeable selector who got only one thing in mind: to send the listener on a twisted bon voyage!

BKV013 is 7 inches of infectious, Osaka-matured, aquatic dub from 7FO. 7FO-san has been in touch with Bokeh for over a year and kindly showed them round Kyoto on the BKV Japan world tour (we ate a baby squid that had a boiled egg where the brain used to be - crazy).

This is 7FO’s first proper wax outing after homegrown albums made local waves with his fusion of Japanese new age and dub miniatures. Previous albums also had mastering credits by Bokeh alumni and Osaka mixing desk alchemist Kabamix.

2016 saw 7FO reach wider audiences with Water Falls Into A Blank, a cassette and multi-media project via RVNG Intl’s Commend See series. Bandcamp user Standard Grey summed it up best:

“If Joe Meek lived on to collaborate with Harry Hosono and Inoyama Land and make idiosyncratic dubbed out Japanese Minyo and off-world colony exotica... “

‘Water Vapour’ features the enigmatic Sea Urchin - the duo of Francesco Cavaliere (on FX) and Leila Hasan (on otherworldly vocals). They’ve released an LP for Belgian imprint Kraak and Francesco notched a 2016 highlight with his solo LPs on Hundebiss.

Further departing from both the cinematic abstraction of ‘Piteous Gate’ and the hectic drums of ‘Damaged Merc’, Berlin producer M.E.S.H.’s new full-length, ‘Hesaitix’, is marked by its hyper-ornamented rhythms and a sense of pensive, moonlit spaces.

The atmosphere has shifted; the radical deconstruction of previous releases has given way to subtler interventions, building new structures in strange territories. Shifting from the meditative to states of manic unease, Hesaitix is an unnerving injection into both the social space of club music and the interior space of digital audio fantasy.

How did I become so stupid?

A sound can be both formless and over-rendered, like a boneless but fleshy hand from a life drawing class.

What agent could set these broken sounds in motion?

A laugh behind an evil curtain. A drummer that’s cool and grotesque, a detuned siren. A brushfire under a full moon.

Recorded in Berlin and Umbria, Hesaitix sees Janus resident and PAN staple M.E.S.H. firmly engaged in a kind of sonic worldbuilding, a place where the unconscious and the alien intersect.
