Stasis, foreboding (Andrew Ball)

Rush was written for Barega SQ in 2011 by Australian composer Michael Bakrnčev. The work was given it's world premiere at the World Saxophone Congress XVI 2012 (St. Andrews, Scotland). Rush is an example of Bakrnčev's highly idiomatic style, which combines uniquely Australian influences with stylistic elements of traditional music of the composer's Macedonian heritage. Three Serpents was written in 2013 for the group by Barega's tenor saxophonist/resident composer Andrew Ball. Various elements of the work's three continuous movements are inspired by mythology and symbolism (excerpted here to include movement 1 "Hydra" and 3 "Coatlique"). Three Serpents expands the textural capabilities of the quartet - each ensemble member doubles on two saxes throughout the work. Pondside was originally composed in 1993 when Denson was studying with George Russell at the New England Conservatory. It celebrates Jamaica Pond, a much-loved landmark in the neighbourhood of Jamaica Plain in Boston. Surrounded by trees and frequented by swans and ducks, the pond was an oasis of beauty and calm in a large and violent American city. This arrangement is one of three saxophone quartet settings of compositions which date from this important period in Denson’s musical life.
