We're very excited to bring you the second instalment of The Sunrise Mixtapes, and our first guest-mix: None other than Mr Phil Mison! 

A chance meeting with José Padilla at London's Milk Bar lead to a two-season DJ residency at the iconic Café Del Mar in Ibiza in the mid nineties. Phil continues to produce and tour the world. A true champion of the Balearic scene, we were thrilled that he said Yes when we reached out to ask if he’d like to contribute to the series, especially seeing as the mix he’s submitted is a very special live recording of a set he did at the Café Del Mar back in August 1994. It’s a simply gorgeous selection of white-Isle classics and oddities, including ‘Mediterranean Dream’ by Shahin & Sepehr, ‘Voodoo Jammin’ by Dancing Fantasy and ‘Yawn Yawn Yawn’ by Sth Notional, just to mention a handful as there are so many great records in this mix - Seminal music from the golden age of chill.

Phil Mison - Café Del Mar Ibiza '94 mix

Next up in our Record Club Guest Mix series are Sanctuary, the moniker of Ben and Liam, a DJ duo from Australia who have been living in Berlin for the past 9 years. You may be familiar with their 'Life Classics' project. It started as an output for their own edits then later branched out into a mix series and club residency at OHM in Berlin.

Their mix landed in our inbox and from the get-go we knew it was destined for the Record Club series. Covering many spectrums of soul, it masterfully glides through tempos and unleashes a quiet storm inside you. Not ones to fear a vocal, it's stuffed full of soaring voices, sweet strings and the tightest grooves. An extended blend done right!

The guys pulled from of a couple of record bags and served it up on 1210’s at their Berlin base. As they described it "back to back burgers, boozas and records all the way". 

The mix is loaded with many of their favourites and a few dusty ones from the back of their shelves. Look out for cuts from Reggie S, Stage Coach, Edwynn Page and Herby Charles. It's packed with winners, some you knew, some you do now. A real steppers' delight.

Recorded live at Giant Steps on Easter Sunday, 31 March 2024.

The clocks went forward. The speakers were still moving. (They don’t call it a travelling sound system for nothing.) Once the sound settled and after a needle change or two, the dancers flooded in and the sun dipped out of sight.

This recording picks up from about that moment. Just a fun, loose energy from a crowd that knew Monday was a freebie. Flowing between groovers and steppers as the night got extended (twice). 

We felt the love and gratitude, and hope you enjoy the listen back.

Q: How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the result? 

I’ve been meditating a lot. Haha, no, honestly, my little girl loves to play with the levers on my sound card, so the recording part has become a bit more time-consuming and nerve-wracking. Other than that, it’s the usual. I have a box where I keep the new records I want to use. I start with those to see what direction they want to take me, and add a few older favorites where they might fit. 



Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

I have quite a few records here that I’ve found while traveling over the last few years. Some from my visits to Sweden and Denmark and four or five from our last visit to Argentina. The rest of the family was sick with the flu at the beginning of our time in Buenos Aires, so I had more time than expected to visit record stores in and around the city. Knowing where I found a record or who recommended it to me is always a nice memory, and it remains with most of my records even after 30 years. 



Q: How do you dig for old/new music/records?

Well, most of it is online these days, but I still love to go out diggin or swap with friends. These days I rarely have the time to go to record stores, flea markets or second-hand stores, but it’s all the more fun. Diggin used to be much more dependent on whether I found something nice or not, now I can just keep going for the fun of it. 



Q: One record that doesn’t want to leave your turntable lately?

I try not to play my favorite record(s) non-stop like I used to, but rather as a reward after a long day or when I need to cheer myself up. It’s usually hard for me to choose one, but lately it’s been “pursuit of color” I’d say. It took me more than fifteen years to find a copy and when I finally did, I had almost forgotten how much I loved it.  



Q: Music bonds people. Any djs/projects/etc.. you would like to shout out? 

Big up to all my friends here in Zürich: the hum‘ crew M&M, Oli, phantom island massiv Tobi, Ron, Lexx, my Kern buddies, Fabi for keeping it real and all the good laughs, Nick and the whole crew, Alex and Sacha and everyone involved, missing it, Buzz for never stopping, Synths of World for the good energy, much love, CocoFresco, looking forward.
