The second single from "A Guide to the Birdsong of Western Africa" comes from Senegalese super-group Wau Wau Collectif and features Kora maestro Lamine Cissokho. They made a beautiful track inspired by the Yellow-casqued hornbill, a species that faces a high risk of extinction in the wild, mainly due to habitat loss and hunting. The lyrics call on citizens of the world to mobilise, come together and protect our ecosystems.

M.RUX - Plime (Edit)

For this our sixth Botanas single series we have the pleasure to present two stunning original tracks and one beautiful edit from Canadian producer Oonga (who you might have spotted on our Mare Insularum compilation). Oonga is a DJ/producer from Montreal who works with Stonetree Records. 

Opener El Caracol is one of the most personal tracks the artist has ever made. It is based on a poem written by Eli´s (Oonga) dad and dedicated to him. It was written after the two of them had a really deep conversation about hidden pain and then months later his dad showed him the words, and he was extremely moved and so created this beautiful track. 

This inspiration came at the same time as Oonga's exposure to the neo-folkloric slow cumbia tech sound while travelling. He put the two together and this special Botanas was born. His dear friend Ana adapted the words into Spanish and sang the melodies (as well as doing the art). 

Oonga´s music captured our ears right away and these three tracks are the perfect soundtrack to the end of the summer for those of us in the norther hemisphere or to welcome the end of the Winter and brighter times for all those down south!

Lagartijeando is synonymous with pushing the contemporary Alt-Latin electronic scene forwards along with his contemporaries Nicola Cruz, Cancha Via Circuito and El Buho. Strongly influenced by his travels through Latin America, his signature psychedelic electronic tracks blend everything from traditional folk from the Bolivian alti-plano to the jungle beats of Brazil. 

Since signing to ZZK records (Nicola Cruz, Cancha Via Circuito) in 2009 he has gone on to release on Waxploitation (Gnarles Barkley, Dangermouse) and Wonderwheel Recordings (Nickodemus, El Buho) where his latest album entered the Bandcamp top 100 albums of 2017. Renowned for beautiful textures and layers in his production work, Lagartijeando has garnered support from the likes of The Fader, Remezcla, KCRW, NPR and many others. 

Caboclo is Portuguese for a person with mixed indigenous Brazilian and European ancestry. The three track EP meshes Afro-Brazilian rhythms with Chacarera and house beats. The EP is a celebration of the changing cultures and sounds of Latin America.

You may know Fede as the drummer and percussionist for Chancha Vía Circuito´s live band, having made a reputation around the world for his rhythmic virtuosity and trademark broken beats.

Following “Hologramas” the captivating opening track on Shika Shika’s “Mare Insularum” compilation, “De aquí hasta aquí” is Fede’s first full-length release. On it he shares with us his complex, poly-rhythmic universe through ten tracks uniting his own South American origins, with African rhythms and featuring collaborations with Rodrigo Gallardo, Pablo Paz, Wen, Manu Quintans, Klik & Frik and Chancha vía Circuito.
