Toiret Status is Isamu Yorichika from Yamaguchi, Japan. His new work Otohime is his first vinyl record and his second album on Orange Milk following ◎omaru◎ in 2016. Otohime includes collaborations with Co La, and Yoshitaka Hikawa. He has also released music on the labels Noumenal Loom, Plus 100 Records, Pedicure Records, Wasabi Tapes, and Slagwerk.

Isamu began making music as a drummer for noise and hardcore bands which led to his first solo recordings in 2015. As Toiret Status he has said that he wants to create work resembling the idea of food going through digestion, excretion, and then flushing. This cycle is like the regurgitation of sounds sampled from his daily life: movies, video games, and field recordings. The sources are digested and then flushed back out as a different color.

I watched a Toiret Status performance in Fukuoka Japan in a shrine on top of a sumo ring. The show promoters were serving Japanese BBQ (Yakiniku / Yakitori) with a distinct common Japanese BBQ sauce and Heinz yellow mustard, and it was possibly some of the best food I have ever had. While I was eating I watched Isamu aggressively move around the sumo rink using a nintendo controller as a midi device, triggering intense bursts of sound. The first two steps in his goal - consumption and digestion - were happening to me when I first met him. The dedication Japanese people often display in art was also apparent while watching his performance; it felt like a congealing of "Japanese-ness" with the sumo rink, shrine, food, joyful and absurd music all meshing together in a quick burst.


Isamu’s new Toiret Status record Otohime is named after a fairy tale queen (with magical powers?) who lives undersea and entertains travelers by giving out gifts like jewelry. In Japanese this title could be an apt pun for - sound queen. However, Isamu stated that the title is a wishful statement about how his music would be utilized in the future. When people flush a toilet, he hopes his music might play and become a funny reminder of the Japanese emphasis on politeness and social tact. He likes the idea of turning something awkward into something fun. Toiret Status uses romaji (English letters written in Japanese phonetics to describe a foreign or new idea that is not in the Japanese tradition) for his album title, to hint at a pun and imply the desired function of the music while simultaneously alluding to Japanese folklore - a queen who makes music.

Maya’mi is the third release and first LP on Orange Milk from Alex Colombo’s Diamond Soul project. The album continues to experiment with hyper-abstracted electronics and collage aesthetics, which Colombo refers to as ‘mixed media’ music. Even though samples are used sparingly on the album, it retains a sense of micro genres and varied sources colliding on a moment to moment basis, a feel that I alway find comparable to fellow Orange Milk artists Koeosaeme, toiret status, and DJWWWW. Colombo views the music as a metaphor for the uncertainty and fragility of culture and our own memories through time. 

He says: “when I started work on the album I was thinking about things from my past that I never fully realized or maybe erased on my own through building new reality as you get older.” 

I’ve always related to this style of rapid, through-composed music because it moves at a pace similar to an agitated mind, with thoughts appearing and going on tangents second by second. Of course having touched on the music’s pace, I would regret not mentioning that there are also moments of beautiful calm and lengthier melodic phrases at play, like the album closer “Screens” or the ascending lyrical melody in “Sand Dollar Lingo”, where featured artist Eric Mandat’s affected Clarinet sounds like a sampled opera singer. (For those not aware of Eric Mandat, he’s an established educator, composer, and clarinetist that I would recommend looking up.)

The track “Rose Gold” is also a collaboration with Mari Maurice aka more eaze, whose signature auto-tuned vocals meld with MIDI choirs and saxophone before disintegrating into one of the albums sparsest moments where light scratching electronics punctuate stretches of silence.

In the stores they’re pushing packed sugars
That never used to interest me 
I’m into it now strictly to drown out the bad taste in my mouth 
I disregard an orange hard plastic top 
Sometimes it’s dark green 
There’s no difference in the liquid inside 
It rides a line between syrupy and smooth
Between robitussin and fresh water 
I pour around 2/3s of the bottle into a checkered gutter 
Then I take a plastic spoon I picked up from any convenience store and measure out one teaspoon of pressed leaf
The leaf can be red or green veined
Lately my body has become tolerant to red veined so I’ve been getting the green 
It’s called green vein but once it’s beat it has a pale complexion to it
It’s a fine powder like white beach sand 
You funnel the spoon into the mouth of the bottle and watch the hydrophobic powder clump in resistance 
Shake and wait
