Cult sensation Gloria Ann Taylor, who in the early 1970s laid the groundwork for much of disco, R&B, and modern soul as we know it, sees her posthumous release 'Be Worthy' reimagined by renowned producers Flying Mojito Bros into a euphoric, gospel-piano-house-esque West Coast disco cruiser.

"What an honor it is to have been invited to remix the work of such an important and innovative heritage artist" say the duo. "We wish we'd have had the opportunity to chat with and learn from Gloria herself. This remix is our small contribution and dedication to a towering musical legacy of talent, guts and pioneering genre-crossing. Viva Gloria!"

The record looks as good as it sounds too, with Flying Mojito Bros art-directing a colorful and cosmic reimagining of the original cover via illustration wizard Nick Potts, reflecting the bros’ transplantation of Gloria's soul diva spirit into their own southwestern desertscape dreamworld.

Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

Beatnik City rolls it’s sleeves up, slowly dips it’s strong hands in a bowl of resin, then a bowl of haribo tangtastics, turns towards us and beckons us on for battle…but wait! Beatnik City is a lover, not a fighter! And this is Northern Beats Volume 2, which means only sunshine funshine and hijinks will ensue

Turns out the resin and haribo were for Aldo Vanucci’s vajazzle, who knew Hiphoppapotamus and Shimi Sonic owned their own sparkly sweets beauty parlour? DJ Ozyboy was in earlier for back sack and Caramac, Leygo is in room one having his Brazilian nuts, Badboe is in room two having a candy necklace - we’re pretty sure that is definitely porn. Superfort is early for his dirty herbert sherbet dib dab and Daytoner is in the toilet having a Curly Wurly, we’d best leave him to it. F-Block is having his hair set a fantastic candy floss pink and Retro the Robot is just smashing everything up with a giant rubber mallet, he’s been hitting the space dust quite hard and is likely expecting everything to explode into skittles.

Willy Wonka would most definitely approve of this kind of behaviour, taste the rainbow!

Review: 

62 collections deep and still blazing up any party in a 1000 mile radius; Katakana deliver yet another fun and funk-fuelled package. All laced with a heavy rhythmic theme, attention to groove detail is paid throughout as we're treated to range of classic and deeply dug edits. "Galaxy" sets the tone with a sleazy strutting war cry before we're hurled into a Latin frenzy on both the sultry "Camina" and the bull-fighting "Descarga". Elsewhere "Leroy Loves Ya" brings the soulful touch and "JB World" closes with a little psychedelic mystique.
