National Theater & Jetzt Musik Festival has been doing an amazing job at combining electronic music and other art forms as represented by the institutions in Mannheim. In March 2012 the deep sounds from the Spanish electronic duo Pulshar and readings of texts by contemporary authors created an imaginary map of migration routes from Africa to Spain and further on into the cities of Germany. An evening that deals with the other side of globalization, the Europe of borders and the darkness of the sea. The text was read in German and Spanish language.

This release is the first edited material by Pulshar after the acclaimed “Inside” (Desolat, 2010). Perhaps the term “program music” or “descriptive music” adjusts better to the album than “ambient music”, since it is a type of music composed especially for a series of texts that transport us to a specific place and characters. At the same time it is music that keeps it’s autonomy, it can be enjoyed without the plot or without being present in the theatre, given its personality. 

ACT 1:

Introduction: the ocean, main character, judge, majestic, vast and unknown. A stage is left behind, something is yet to come… but this “something” depends on luck, nature. We put ourselves in destiny’s hands.

“The girl from the neighboring town is already in Spain. I will also make it to Europe and send money back home. I cannot stay here any longer. There we go!”

ACT 2:

The ocean is calm. You can still hear the echoes from the surroundings that are being left behind. The land, the place where one was born fades away in the distance. All there is left to do is wait as we go deeper into the horizon. The coin has been flipped. The journey has begun.

“Journeys about hope, misleading promises, the impossibility of walling off the seas, dry throats, empty stomachs, folded hands and skies puffed with stars, of dangerous surges and vague perspectives, not knowing anything, about the unknown, sinking, faith, dying and wanting to live.”

ACT 3:

Nighttime arrives, the first night at sea. Only moonlight shines upon us… We must try to get some sleep… Meanwhile, with our eyes closed, we seem to hear voices coming from the depths of the ocean… But mermaids don’t exist… Is it our imagination of due to fatigue?

“Depth. Silence. Being quiet. Not think about anything. Not search… It is too late to scream. Calm. Pulse. Rest.”

ACT 4:

I have a feeling that something is going wrong. I don’t want to sleep; I don’t want nightmares to come back. The stories about those who tried and failed come back to my mind. Its not going to happen to me… Right?

“Now I am sinking, I am in the water, I sink deeper and deeper, its getting dark, soon the surface will be out of sight, something sparks, I reach the ocean floor, coral reefs, colorful and sharp blades.”

ACT 5:

I don’t know what happened, but I am on a beach. Did I make it? Maybe I am dead and I am imagining it… There are unknown people around me who are trying to tell me something. I don’t understand them. Is this Europe?

“Those algae, shells and corals which only exist between Africa and Europe should be interrogated, only them, which keep the memory of those who drowned, would know how to sing a song which could still move the heart of Europe.”

One of dub-techno´s main features is the “time freezing” thrill, the one that gets us into an eternal loop without past or future. The hungarian producer Tamás Olejnik knows how it works; “Deep Sea Exploration”,  his second reference for Avantroots, has become his masterclass.

An album of which all five titles are the perfect guide throughout the whole journey. “Bioluminescence” introduces the dark landscapes. Then, “Tectonic Plates” and “Manta”  make us float on subaquatic textures. “Plankton” is composed of up-and-down sound currents which peacefully swerve us from one side to the other. Concluded with “ Deep Sea Exploration”, a magnificent ending to our trip , just a new invitation to dive the seabeds once more.
