Agoria - For One Hour (Paradis Remix)

Its a bold and brave producer who takes on the task of remixing a stone-cold classic cut from the annuals of House history, but thats just what Joris Voorn, KiNK, Phil Weeks and Ambivalent have done with their fresh versions of DJ Dozia’s Ovum debut ’Pop Culture’. 

Originally released back in 1998 ‘Pop Culture’ rapidly gained cult status on the underground. Created by fellow Philly resident Dozia Blakey, the raw and sparse original, at over ten minutes, was made for the dark, strobe-lit, sweat-on-walls rooms where it found favour. Backed by the equally popular Size-9 remix, ‘Pop Culture’ was, and still is, a record that never leaves the box for many. Now, with a fresh set of remixes, its set for a glorious return. The original twelve inch is still one of the most sought after twelve inches on discogs. 

So what did persuade our set of remixers to take on this challenge? Well, lets ask them…

Ambivalent - "Pop Culture is one of my all-time favorite records, not just on Ovum, but in the history of dance music. I regularly hassled Josh about finding the parts because I always wanted to just play with them. When he finally found them on an old DAT, I went crazy. It is an insurmountable challenge to improve on the original, all I could do was pay homage in my own way.”
Whether its staying respectfully close to the original or taking it admirably in a new direction, we think you’ll agree that this is one of the most complete and spectacular remix packages of the 2015.

Olivier Mateu (Rodriguez Jr.) will be the first to admit it; he’s never satisfied. From his time as a mathematics student in his nascent rave days in the French city of Montepellier, to the itchy musical feet that would only grow as the years progressed, and his time as one-half of influential live act The Youngsters on Laurent Garnier’s FComs label, he’s always striven to push himself to the next level – both creatively and technically.

With each release, you can simultaneously get the sense of an exquisitely talented artists who is grafting to get the most out of himself and his machines, while being astonished at the creativity and intricate sound design of his work to create stirring dancefloor-ready compositions that sound just as good a club or festival, as they do through a pair of headphones during a home listening session.

The generous four-track work is lead by title track ‘Petropolis’ - a master study in tension and release, the stripped back techno beats, summon the kind of sweat-dripping off-the-walls transcendental rave experience that’ll have you grinning for days afterwards. ‘Capitelle’, is vintage Rodriguez Jr., uplifting and melancholic in equal doses and is propelled by a muscular, compression-heavy bassline that builds towards a sublimely trippy crescendo.

Always one to technically stretch himself, ‘Sulfuric State’ sees the savvy sound technician utilize his beloved 303 not for a distorted, full throttle acid onslaught, but rather something far gentler; a mesmerizing and emotive nine-minute trip through time and space. The first sneak peek from the Frenchmen’s upcoming album, ‘Cily’ sees the tempo drop into dreamy ‘90s house territory, with subtle references to the classic French touch sound, but re-imagined in Rodriguez Jr.'s own fresh original way.

Hobo - Magic Mirror

Tamoanchan is a humble dedication to the people, the beauty, the landscapes and the the darkness of México. This music was written in and inspired by El Búho´s two years living in Mexico City and time spent travelling across the country. It´s sound encompasses cumbia rhythms, deep basses and wavering flutes alongside field recordings of crickets, forests and festivals. 

Cumbia de Totl or the cumbia of the owl narrates the journey out of Mexico City, rising above the mountains and into Mexico´s beautiful rolling landscapes. La Hora Más Oscura was written in the darkest hours of the night before dawn breaks at the Bahidora festival and is a dedication to the post-dancefloor. Noche Tepotzotlán, the sister track to Mañana Tepotzlan, was written on a return to the mythical town just outside of Mexico City but this time underneath the stars rather than as the dawn broke. Heroíca refers to Heroíca Veracruz the capital of one of the most troubled and violent states in Mexico but also one of the most historic and beautiful.
