Flashback to 1999 and a small, east-Belgian city called Tienen where a teenager named Davy Vandegaer is cruising on his skate ramp in the back of his garden. He’s getting some energy out before heading to “The Sphere” later that night, a bar where he can listen to a new, otherworldly music called ‘progressive’ which was his first initiation to techno music.


Hooked on techno, Davy became a regular (after)clubber at Factory, The Groove, Cherry Moon, Extreme and a few years later started his own party concept with his brother Ken and 2 friends Down Under, holding residencies at Club Silo in Leuven from 2008 to 2011 and Fuse, Brussels from 2011 to 2015. 

The sound of Down Under was an eye-opener for me as a young clubber. It was the first time I heard sophisticated, deep, stretched-out minimal house and techno. Davy was the person who invited Nicolas Lutz to Belgium for the first time, and that set changed mine and many others’ musical lives forever. Another WOW moment in little Walrus’ club-life-history related to Davy: I remember going up to the tiny dj booth of Fuse’s motion room, during the early morning hours, while everyone was flying, and asking one of the brothers playing (Ken & Davy) “what’s that spaced out minimal techno tune?” They replied: “Oh it’s a Terrence Dixon release!”

Davy and Ken moved to London and started several warehouse parties, and Davy soon became the resident of the infamous Cartulis parties. He then settled down in Berlin to start his very own deep dedicated techno project called Futurepast. 

Davy proposed a great idea to me a couple of months back to record a mix dedicated to his early clubbing days and inspired by that “dance-café” The Sphere. 

Davy is a great example of an artist who is developing his own path by slowly transforming himself but staying true to his techno roots, and I’m very grateful we all can have a listen to what these roots are.
