Bhai Baljit Singh explains through the sakhi (true story) of a beloved Gursikh called Bhai Manjh Ji what it means to earn Sikhi & become worthy of receiving Naam (connection to the divine) from The Guru. 

Upon hearing the praise & glory of Guru Arjun Dev Ji, Bhai Manjh Ji went into the court of Guru Arjun Dev Ji and begged for the precious gift of Sikhi. He begged to be receive the gift of Naam. Guru Ji replied saying, “This path is sharper than the edge of a sword and thinner than the strand of a hair. Sikhi is a difficult path, take some time and think about it.” Bhai Manjh Ji remained persistent and kept begging. Seeing his persistence, Guru Ji said,  “If you’re truly yearning for this gift then go home and remove the stones that you have made in memory of Sakhi Sarvar (Muslim Holy man) that you worship but remember everyone will turn against you”. Bhai Manjh returned back to his home and got rid of the tombs and all the locals turned against him. His position of being the town chief was removed from him. Bhai Manjh lost his status & riches but he remained un-wavered and his thirst for Naam grew deeper and deeper. He returned to Amritsar and became immersed in serving in The Guru’s Langar (kitchen) bringing firewood from the local jungles. One of the days as Bhai Manjh Ji was returning from the jungle he fell into a shallow well due to facing a huge storm. The moment Bhai Manjh Ji fell into the well Guru Arjun Dev Ji got up from where they were seated and ran towards their horse but instead ran barefoot, shouting out to the Gursikhs, “Grab some rope, grab some rope and follow me”. Guru Ji reached by the well and told the Gursikhs to throw the rope into the well so that Bhai Manjh can climb out but Bhai Manjh Ji said, “Take out the firewood for The Guru’s Langar first then I’ll come out”. When Bhai Manjh climbed out of the well with the support of the rope, Guru Ji opened their open arms out wide and embraced Bhai Manjh to their chest singing, “Manjh is the Guru’s beloved, the beloved of The Guru, Manjh will be carried across in The Guru’s boat”. Guru Ji then said ask for anything my beloved Manjh, Bhai Manjh begged for the same thing, “Please bless me with gift of Sikhi.” 

In this way Guru Sahib Ji prepared Bhai Manjh Ji to truly value the precious gift of Naam.

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Raag Sorath, Fifth Mehal:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
When it was pleasing to the Perfect True Guru,
ਤਾ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਮਾਣਾ ॥
then I chanted Naam, the Name of Pervading Vaheguru.

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
The Lord of the Universe extended His Mercy to me,
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਪੈਜ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
and Vaheguru saved my honour.

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
Vaheguru's feet are forever peace-giving.
ਜੋ ਇਛਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Whatever fruit one desires, he receives; his hopes shall not go in vain. Pause.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
That Saint, unto whom the Lord of Life, the Great Giver, extends His Mercy - he alone sings the Glorious Praises of Vaheguru.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਣਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
His soul is absorbed in loving devotional worship; his mind is pleasing to Supreme Vaheguru.

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਜਸੁ ਰਵਣਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਲਾਥੀ ॥
Twenty-four hours a day, he chants the Praises of Vaheguru, and the bitter poison does not affect him.
ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਲੀਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਕਰਤੈ ਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਭਏ ਸਾਥੀ ॥੩॥
My Creator Vaheguru has united me with Himself, and the Holy Saints have become my companions.

ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਸਰਬਸੁ ਦੀਨੇ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
Taking me by the hand, He has given me everything, and blended me with Himself.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੫॥੭੯॥
Says Nanak, everything has been perfectly resolved; I have found the Perfect True Guru.
