ਪਉੜੀ ੫ : ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਕ
King Janak 

ਭਗਤੁ ਵਡਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਕੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ।
King Janak was a great saint who amidst maya remained indifferent to it.

ਦੇਵ ਲੋਕ ਨੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬੁ ਸਭਾ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ।
Along with gans and gandharvs (calestial musicians) he went to the abode of the gods.

ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਸੁਣਿ ਵਿਲਲਾਵਨਿ ਜੀਅ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ।
From there, he, hearing the cries of inhabitants of hell, went to them.

ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ਨੋ ਆਖਿਓਨੁ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਰਿ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ।
He asked the god of death, Dharamrai, to relieve all their suffering.

ਕਰੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ਹਉ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ।
Hearing this, the god of death told him he was a mere servant of the eternal Lord (and without His orders he could not liberate them).

ਗਹਿਣੇ ਧਰਿਓਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਪਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਰਜਾਸੀ।
Janak offered a part of his devotion and remembrance of the name of the Lord.

ਪਾਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਉ ਅਤੁਲ ਨ ਤੁਲਾਸੀ।
All the sins of hell were found not equal even to the counterweight of balance.

ਨਰਕਹੁ ਛੁਟੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕਟੀ ਗਲਹੰੁ ਸਿਲਕ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ।
In fact no balance can weigh the fruits of recitation and remembrance of the Lords name by the gurmukh.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ॥੫॥
All the creatures got liberated from hell and the noose of death was cut.  Liberation and the technique of attaining it are the servants of the name of the Lord.

kiaa gun tere saar sam(h)aalee moh niragun ke dhaataare ||
What virtues and excellences of Yours should I cherish and contemplate? I am worthless, while You are the Great Giver.

ਬੈ ਖਰੀਦੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਥਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

I am Your slave - what clever tricks could I ever try? This soul and body are totally Yours.

Raag Aasaa, First Mehla:

ਛਿਅ ਘਰ ਛਿਅ ਗੁਰ ਛਿਅ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ !) ਛੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਹਨ, ਛੇ ਹੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਚਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਛੇ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਧਾਂਤ ਹਨ । 
There are six schools of philosophy, six teachers, and six sets of teachings.

ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥
ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ-ਗੁਰੂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਇੱਕ ਹੈ । (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ) ਉਸ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵੇਸ ਹਨ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੇ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ) ।੧।
But the Teacher of teachers is the One, who appears in so many forms. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਜਿਸ (ਸਤਸੰਗ-) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ
O Baba: that system in which the Praises of the Creator are sung

ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਉਸ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਂਭ ਰੱਖ (ਉਸ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਈ ਰੱਖ । ਇਸੇ ਵਿਚ) ਤੇਰੀ ਭਲਾਈ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
-follow that system; in it rests true greatness. ||1||Pause||

ਵਿਸੁਏ ਚਸਿਆ ਘੜੀਆ ਪਹਰਾ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਹੋਆ ॥
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਸੁਏ, ਚਸੇ, ਘੜੀਆਂ, ਪਹਰ, ਥਿੱਤਾਂ, ਵਾਰ, ਮਹੀਨਾ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰੁੱਤਾਂ ਹਨ, 
The seconds, minutes and hours, days, weeks and months,

ਸੂਰਜੁ ਏਕੋ ਰੁਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
ਪਰ ਸੂਰਜ ਇਕੋ ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਖ ਵਖ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ), 
and the various seasons originate from the one sun;

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਵੇਸ ॥੨॥੨॥
ਤਿਵੇਂ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ (ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਆਦਿਕ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸਰੂਪ ਹਨ ।੨।੨।
O Nanak, in just the same way, the many forms originate from the Creator. ||2||2||

ਹੋਲੀ ਦੇ ਫੁਲਾਣ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ਬੂ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਬਾਗ਼ ਨੂੰ ਮਹਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।
The aroma of spring flowers of Holi festival makes the whole garden, the world, full of special fragrance.

ਲਬਿ ਚੂੰ ਗੁੰਚਾ ਰਾ ਫ਼ਰਖੰਦਾ ਖ਼ੂ ਕਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੧ ॥
ਬੰਦ ਕਲੀ ਵਰਗੇ ਹੋਠਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਭਾਗੀ ਤਬੀਅਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।
And gave the blossoming bud-like lips a pleasant disposition. (33) (1)

ਗੁਲਾਬੋ ਅੰਬਰੋ ਮਸ਼ਕੋ ਅਬੇਰੀ
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੀਣਹ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਣਗ ਗੁਲਾਬ, ਅੰਬਰ, ਮੁਸ਼ਕ ਤੇ ਅਬੀਰ
The Akaalpurakh spread the roses, the sky, the fragrance of musk and                

ਚੂ ਬਾਰਾਨਿ ਬਾਰਿਸ਼ਿ ਅਜ਼ ਸੂ ਬਸੂ ਕਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੨ ॥
ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਸੀਣ ਖਲੇਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।
sandalwood all over like the raindrops. (33) (2)

ਜ਼ਹੇ ਪਿਚਕਾਰੀਏ ਪੁਰ ਜ਼ਾਅਫ਼ਰਾਨੀ
ਕੇਸਰ ਭਰੀ ਪਿਚਕਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿਣਾ #
How beautiful and effective is a saffron filled squirt pump?

ਕਿ ਹਰ ਬੇਰੰਗ ਰਾ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਰੰਗੋ ਬੂ ਕਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੩ ॥
ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹਰ ਬਦ-ਰੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਰੰਗੀਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਗੰਧਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।
That it converts even the discolored and the ugly into colorful and aromatic. (33) (3)

ਗੁਲਾਲਿ ਅਫ਼ਸ਼ਾਨੀਇ ਦਸਤਿ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ
ਉਸਦੇ ਮੁਬਾਰਿਕ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੁਲਾਲ ਛਿੜਕਣ ਨਾਲ
With the throwing of powdered red color by his holy hands on me

ਜ਼ਮੀਨੋ ਆਸਮਾਂ ਰਾ ਸੁਰਖ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੪ ॥
ਧਰਤੀ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਲਾਲੋ ਲਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ।
It made both the earth and the heaven all crimsen colored for me. (33 ) (4)

ਦੋ ਆਲਮ ਗਸ਼ਤ ਰੰਗੀਣ ਅਜ਼ ਤੁਫ਼ੈਲਸ਼ 
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਦੋਵੇਣ ਦੁਨੀਆਣ ਰੰਗੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਣ,
With His grace, both the worlds began to bathe in colorful dispositions,

ਚੂ ਸ਼ਾਹਮ ਜਾਮਾ ਰੰਗੀਨ ਦਰ ਗੁਲੂ ਕਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੫ ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਣ ਵਰਗੇ ਰੰਗੀਨ ਕਪੜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ।
When he put shiny clothes suitable for only rich people on my neck. (33) (5)

ਕਸੇ ਕੂ ਦੀਦ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਮੁਕੱਦਸ
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤੇ,
Anyone who was fortunate to get a sacred glimpse of Him, the Guru,

ਮੁਰਾਦਿ ਉਮਰ ਰਾ ਹਾਸਿਲ ਨਿਕੋ ਦਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੬ ॥
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਮਝੋ ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਮੁਰਾਦ ਪਾ ਲਈ ।
Take it that he, surely, was able to fulfill his lifelong desire. (33) (6)

ਸ਼ਵਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਖ਼ਾਕਿ ਰਾਹਿ ਸੰਗਤ
ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਤੋਣ ਕੁਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਣ,
Goyaa says, "If I could sacrifice myself for the dust of the path traversed by noble souls,     

ਦਿਲਿ ਗੋਯਾ ਹਮੀਣ ਰਾ ਆਰਜ਼ੂ ਕਰਦ ॥ ੩੩ ॥ ੭ ॥
ਬਸ ਗੋਯਾ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਏਨੀ ਹੀ ਚਾਹ ਹੈ ।
This is all that I have wished and persevered all my life. My life's ambition would be fulfilled." (33) (7)

Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji has Kirtan coursing through his veins as he belongs to the illustrious ‘Zakhmi’ family. His father, Bhai Gursharan Singh Ji was the younger brother of Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi and used to accompany him on tabla. Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji was born to Mata Jasbir Kaur Ji in Adampur, Punjab on 20th December 1952. He developed a keen interest in Kirtan and classical music from a very young age and this was observed by both his father and grandfather, Bhai Daulat Singh Ji. This led to his initiation and formal training under their guidance at the tender age of five. He was also sent to the Kirtan Vidhyala in Nangal run by renowned Prof. Darshan Singh Komal for further training. At the age of 16, he came under the wing of one of the main pillars of Gurmat Sangeet, Bhai Avtar Singh Ji, whose roots in Gurmat Sangeet date back to the time of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Bhai Jaspal Singh Ji acquired a vast repertoire of old Dhrupad compositions from Bhai Avtar Singh Ji and he is adept at performing in many difficult ‘taals’.

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
Maaroo, First Mehla:

ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ਭੂਤਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
(ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀਆਂ ਸਾਂਝਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਪਾਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੂਤ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋਈ ਜਿੰਨ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਪਰੇ ਜੂਹ-ਉਜਾੜ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਚਿਰ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
Some call him a ghost; some say that he is a demon.

ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ਆਦਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਨਹੀਂ) ਨਾਨਕ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਸਾਡੇ ਵਰਗਾ) ਆਦਮੀ (ਹੀ) ਉਂਞ ਹੈ ਆਜਿਜ਼ ਜੇਹਾ ।੧।
Some call him a mere mortal; O, poor Nanak! ||1||

ਭਇਆ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥
ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸ਼ਿਕ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀਆਂ ਸਾਂਝਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ,
Crazy Nanak has gone insane, after his Lord, the King.

ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਨਾਨਕ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
I know of none other than the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਭੈ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ (ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ-ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ) 
He alone is known to be insane, when he goes insane with the Fear of God.

ਏਕੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਜੇਹਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹ ਝੱਲਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
He recognizes none other than the One Lord and Master. ||2||

ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਏਕਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ ਤੁਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ,
He alone is known to be insane, if he works for the One Lord.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਦੂਜੀ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਾਇ ॥੩॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਰਫ਼ (ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਹੀ) ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੁਖ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਝੱਲਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
Recognizing the Hukam, the Command of his Lord and Master, what other cleverness is there? ||3||

ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਹੋਰ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਮਾੜਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
He alone is known to be insane, when he falls in love with his Lord and Master.

ਮੰਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੭॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਲਿਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਿਗਾਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਝੱਲਾ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੪।੭।
He sees himself as bad, and all the rest of the world as good. ||4||7||
