A talk show where we explore the inspiring lives of various Gurmukhs throughout Sikh History.

Most discussions and learning about Sikhi take place in a formal setting like a Gurdwara (Sikh temple), by way of Punjabi speaking Parchariks (educators) speaking to the congregation. In recent years, many educators have taken to online platforms such as YouTube & Facebook to inspire, educate and spread the message of Sikhi to the world, in English.

Our successful and popular YouTube channel, Basics of Sikhi (be sure to subscribe!) has been hugely appreciated as a new, interactive and modern way of learning about Sikhi, especially by the younger generation, some of which who cannot speak or understand Punjabi so much.

In a similar way, this Podcast, hosted by Sukhdeep Singh (Sikh educator at Basics of Sikhi) and Karanveer Singh (Sikh volunteer), is continuing that innovation by bringing learning about Sikhi to an informal and relaxed platform in the form of this talk show podcast. Sukhdeep & Karanveer will invite different guests to the Podcast to discuss various topics directly and indirectly related to Sikhi e.g. Sikh history, traditions, fitness, nutrition, mental health, music and the list goes on!...

Gurmukh Series | Basics of Sikhi Podcast

In this first episode, we initially discuss what Gurbani (the Guru’s words) has to say about Gurmukhs, Saints and Divine beings. Once understanding Guru’s teachings, we look at the life of a great Sikh from the 20th Century known as Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji.

We are excited to share the life of Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji (Mastuana wale). Sant Attar Singh Ji is a Sikh Saint who spread the message of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Sikhi during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

This podcast focuses on why Sant Baba Attar Singh Ji came to this earth, their childhood, education, time in the army, and finally, sharing amazing experiences of Baba Ji when they visited Sri Hazur Sahib. These experiences include not eating for eight days and having darshan (the blessed vision) of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

ਹੇਰਤ ਹੇਰਤ ਹੇ ਸਖੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਰਾਨੁ ॥
herat herat he sakhee hoi rahee hairaan ||
ਹੇ ਸਖੀ! (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ) ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ 
Seeing and perceiving, O my companions, I am wonder-struck and amazed.

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੀ ਮੈ ਮੁਈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
hau hau karatee mai muiee sabadh ravai man giaan ||
ਕਿ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ‘ਹਉਂ ਹਉਂ’ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ‘ਮੈਂ’ ਮਰ ਗਈ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ‘ਹਉਮੈ’ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਆਦਤ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਈ ਹੈ) । (ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ) ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਹੈ ।
My egotism, which proclaimed itself in possessiveness and self-conceit, is dead. My mind chants the Word of the Shabad, and attains spiritual wisdom.

ਹਾਰ ਡੋਰ ਕੰਕਨ ਘਣੇ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
haar ddor ka(n)kan ghane kar thaakee seegaar ||
ਮੈਂ ਬਥੇਰੇ ਹਾਰ ਹਮੇਲਾਂ ਕੰਙਣ (ਪਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ) ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਚੁਕੀ ਸਾਂ 
I am so tired of wearing all these necklaces, hair-ties and bracelets, and decorating myself.

ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਗਲ ਗੁਣਾ ਗਲਿ ਹਾਰੁ ॥
mil preetam sukh paiaa sagal gunaa gal haar ||
(ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਹ ਮਿਲਿਆ, ਭਾਵ, ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਭਾ, ਹੁਣ ਜਦੋਂ ‘ਹਉਮੈ’ ਮੁਈ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਲੱਭਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਹਾਰ ਹੈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਹਾਰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੀ) ।
Meeting with my Beloved, I have found peace; now, I wear the necklace of total virtue.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
naanak guramukh paieeaai har siau preet piaar ||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ;
O Nanak, the Gurmukh attains the Lord, with love and affection.

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
har bin kin sukh paiaa dhekhahu man beechaar ||
ਤੇ, (ਬੇਸ਼ਕ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ, (ਭਾਵ, ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੱਡ-ਬੀਤੀ ਹੀ ਦੱਸ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਾ ।
Without the Lord, who has found peace? Reflect upon this in your mind, and see.

ਹਰਿ ਪੜਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਖਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
har paRanaa har bujhanaa har siau rakhahu piaar ||
(ਸੋ, ਹੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ! ਜੇ ਸੁਖ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੜ੍ਹ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ, 
Read about the Lord, understand the Lord, and enshrine love for the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੫੧॥
har japeeaai har dhiaaieeaai har kaa naam adhaar ||51||
(ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੀਏ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ, ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ (ਬਣਾਈਏ) ।੫੧।
Chant the Lord's Name, and meditate on the Lord; hold tight to the Support of the Name of the Lord. ||51||
