Why was the Khalsa created? Why did Guru Gobind Singh Ji start something so different? The thing is, the seed of the Khalsa was sewed long before the tenth Guru.

The preparations for the Birth of Khalsa Panth in 1699 started from the time of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. During their Guruship, each Guru Sahib built the Khalsa Panth's foundation with values and Rehat (Codes of conduct). ਬਛਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਾਇ ਅਕੇਲੀ ॥੧॥
bachhare bin gai akelee ||1||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜ ਕੇ) ਤੜਫਣੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
Without her calf, the cow is lonely. ||1||

ਪਾਨੀਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੀਨੁ ਤਲਫੈ ॥
paaneeaa bin meen talafai ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੱਛੀ ਫੜਫਦੀ ਹੈ, 
Without water, the fish writhes in pain.

ਐਸੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਪੁਰੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aaise raam naamaa bin baapuro naamaa ||1|| rahaau ||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਘਾਬਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
So is poor Naam Dayv without the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||

ਜੈਸੇ ਗਾਇ ਕਾ ਬਾਛਾ ਛੂਟਲਾ ॥
jaise gai kaa baachhaa chhooTalaa ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਜਦੋਂ) ਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੱਛਾ ਕਿੱਲੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਖੁਲ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਗਾਂ ਦੇ) ਥਣ ਚੁੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ, 
Like the cow's calf, which, when let loose,

ਥਨ ਚੋਖਤਾ ਮਾਖਨੁ ਘੂਟਲਾ ॥੨॥
than chokhataa maakhan ghooTalaa ||2||
ਤੇ ਮੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਘੁੱਟ ਭਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ।੨।
sucks at her udders and drinks her milk -||2||

ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਨਾਰਾਇਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
naamadheau naarain paiaa ||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਿਆ, 
So has Naam Dayv found the Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਤ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
gur bheTat alakh lakhaiaa ||3||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਲੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈ ਗਈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ।੩।
Meeting the Guru, I have seen the Unseen Lord. ||3||

ਜੈਸੇ ਬਿਖੈ ਹੇਤ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
jaise bikhai het par naaree ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਵਿਸ਼ਈ ਨੂੰ) ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਨਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, 
As the man driven by sex wants another man's wife,

ਐਸੇ ਨਾਮੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
aaise naame preet muraaree ||4||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ ।੪।
so does Naam Dayv love the Lord. ||4||

ਜੈਸੇ ਤਾਪਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਘਾਮਾ ॥
jaise taapate niramal ghaamaa ||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚਮਕਦੀ ਧੁੱਪ ਵਿਚ (ਜੀਵ-ਜੰਤ) ਤਪਦੇ-ਲੁੱਛਦੇ ਹਨ
As the earth burns in the dazzling sunlight,

ਤੈਸੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਪੁਰੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੫॥੪॥
taise raam naamaa bin baapuro naamaa ||5||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਇਉਂ ਘਾਬਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੫।੪।
so does poor Naam Dayv burn without the Lord's Name. ||5||4||
