Sanctuary Radio is a weekly podcast with Bass Coast’s own Staysee Marie. 

Missing the conversations that festival based harm reduction work brings into her life, Staysee Marie started this series as a way to stay connected with community and causes during the pandemic. This show is primarily in interview format, with a new guest joining every week, covering a range of topics from cultural safety to risk reduction, to consent, and so many other conversations under the umbrella of safety!  The show is intended to be a virtual festival sanctuary space, where listeners can connect with information and supports, learn some new things about self and community care, and even catch a little bit of music! 
The show airs on The Dash Radio  ‘Tastemakers’ Channel Wednesdays at 1pm PST, with the archives hosted by Bass Coast. You can learn more by following Sanctuary Radio’s Instagram account, @sanctuary_radio, where you can also share your ideas or questions for future shows!

About the host: 

Stacey is co-founder & education director of Good Night Out Vancouver, a non-profit society focused on reducing sexual violence in music & nightlife, with a focus on electronic music spaces and festivals.  Good Night Out works with artists, venues, promoters, & patrons to build the capacity to  prevent & respond to sexual harassment and assault. 

For the last 10 years Staysee Marie has directed the Harm Reduction program for Bass Coast Music Festival. This includes training over 100 volunteers every year, running a 24 hour education and sanctuary space, and implementing drug testing services, including the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technology. The harm reduction program at Bass Coast is renowned across North America for its progressive approach to harm reduction. 

Staysee Marie records and produces Sanctuary Radio on both the occupied and unceded ancestral territories of the  xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Skxwú7mesh  and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ  people, as well as the traditional territories of the  Hupacasth First Nation.

This playlist was created in honour of Drahos Zak. An extraordinary illustrator from Czech Republic. After his passing, dear friends and family where invited to share a piece of art to decorate his coffin. The playlist artwork is my energy portrait of Drahos, that was sent along with him to the afterlife.

The mix awakens from a deep organic state into a more steady ecstatic tribal tempo with a beautiful eclectic ending, so everyone should find something to their liking.

Tonantzin represents the Great Mother goddess, or Mother Earth coming from the Aztec language of Nahuatl. She has numerous names and faces across the many First Nations of the world. Weaving her primordial song with the aboriginal didgeridoo, the song anchors the energy of the drum while lifting the Spirit of the dancer to help us remember we are Earth.

Rider Shafique, Ishan Sound, and Kahn need no introductions.  As individual artists and fellow members of Bristol’s Young Echo collective, they are responsible for some of the most crucial music to come out of Bristol in the last decade.  We couldn’t be prouder to deliver this powerful message music in these extremely dread times.

In a catalog overflowing with lyrical majesty, “When Shall We rise” is one of Rider Shafique’s most direct and moving missives yet - a critical dissection of the racist foundations of dominant culture - whether UK, EU, or US - and the struggle of the racially oppressed within it.  The plea to abandon assimilation into Babylon system, in lesser hands could easily be cliched or flat-footed, but with Rider’s pen and voice it is a revelatory spiritual call-to-arms - there are no saviors coming - we are the ones we’ve been waiting for. 

The riddim is classic Kahn & Ishan- uncompromising rockstone mid-tempo steppers that is at once orthodox and utterly, inimitably their own- plucked strings, haunted pipes, pounding kick and heaving bassline in propulsive amalgamation. Straight off the desk, “When Shall We Dub” strips the vocal out entirely, focusing on breaking down the incredibly militant riddim, crafting a dark, roiling ocean of reverb, swells of delay breaking the surface in blackest night.

A closely guarded dub for several years, “When Shall We Rise” is now free to circulate and become the anthem that it demands.
