Alkali usually left Rin between 1 and 2 AM every night. His mother was usually asleep by then. Or drunk. Or both. Regardless, it was a good time for her not to ask too many questions. And it got to a point where she stopped asking all together. Rin still stayed awake until around 5, it wasn't like she had anything to do. Plus she liked the night, it was calming to her, peaceful. It reminded her of the nights she spent after she dropped out of college. Before she lived the life she lived now.

She had heard the term NEET all her life. Not in Education, Employment, or Training. Her parents scorned them avidly. Called them hippies, vagrants, degenerates. They went around just floating, waiting for the next step in life, not doing anything with theirs. Boy, would they be surprised at her now. Their NEET daughter, she was sure they wouldn't even be able to get the words out. And if they knew about the other activities she was engaging in now... well they can't know, and that's what's important. But before those, she was just a NEET, sleeping during the day, roaming the streets at night, laughing at all the corporate puppets walking around with their briefcases and suits, thinking that they've accomplished something, thinking that they're happy. Ha. They don't know happiness. Not like she does. 

She had the house her parents left her after she died, but most nights she spent in a hotel. She enjoyed her freedom, but she missed the soft sounds of living with other people , so she took a liking to the place. It got to a point where the staff knew her by name. "Will you be staying with us tonight Ms. Sawaguchi?", they would say. Rin hated when they called her that, but she always kept a smile and came back with "It's just Rin guys, there's no need to be so formal". "Alright then, Ms. Rin!" , they would say with a smile. Rinse and repeat. But that day was different. When she walked through the door that day, everyone was unusually chipper towards her, like something good was waiting for her. "Hi Ms. Aimi." she said to the middle aged woman at the front desk. Rin was wary at the grin she was wearing on her face. "You have a message Ms. Rin!" giggles rang out through the lobby, accompanied with eye rolling and grunts from the men in recliners. "I didn't know you were so popular with the men Rin!" she exclaimed. Rin smiled back, not sure how to take her compliment, if it was one. "Thanks..." she said as she grabbed her note and proceeded to her room on the 3rd floor, she could hear giggles all the way up the stairway. Don't these women have anything better to do than gossip? Regardless, she had a note. And from a boy at that. She didn't remember talking to any boys recently... she caught herself smiling. It read:

"I like your style. Meet me at The Cove at 10 PM tomorrow.
Sincerely, Venti Mocha Rm. 404"

Venti Mocha? Venti Mocha... Venti Mocha... OH! Venti Mocha guy from the coffee shop this afternoon, she thought. She had got his drink by accident and they both ended up having to switch their drinks with each other and it was this whole hilarious thing.... guess you had to be there. But anyway, they ended up sitting at a table together and talking for hours. He was smart, funny, dangerous, handsome, and best of all.. a NEET. She got so caught up in the moment that when he left she realized that she didn't have a name, number, or anything. Just a cold cup of coffee. But how had he found her? Room 404.... he lives here? Why hasn't she ever seen him before?

The Cove was something of a restaurant, more like a bar, in the southwest end of the city. It was one of those low lit places, where you often have live music and open mic poetry. She'd never been there, she heard that after 8 on weekdays the place floods with suits. But it was a saturday, and for the first time in a long time, she was on time. He was about 15 minutes late, but she was glad about that, she had only discovered the spinach in her teeth about 5 minutes before. She smiled the rest of the night, he was pretty smooth. His name was Kisuke, he liked baseball, western culture and rock, and taking things that didn't belong to him. It was obvious, he didn't inherit money like Rin... how else could a NEET afford to live in a hotel with no support? But she didn't care she embraced it, embraced him. After that it was them against the world. Rin never stole, not then, but she knew when he did. Sometimes he would even make her be a lookout. And she would drive the getaway car. He would give her a cut of the loot, whether it be drugs or money, even though she didn't need it. And it went swimmingly, up until he left her. Without rhyme or reason , he dumped her, and the next day he was gone. Just. Like. That. Ms. Aimi said he checked out for good... and that was it. Gone. Three days later, Rin pickpocketed one of the guests in the hotel. She didn't know why she did it, but it felt good to her... right. She opened the wallet. "Five dollars? .... Cheap bitch.."
