Mostly for supporters of the Toon(NEWCASTLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB that is!)  and lovers of good music everywhere! (ho ho..gawd wot a scream!). Nicked some of Geordie Ridleys lyrics (only most of em!) from 'The Blaydon Races'.  Have now put 'Balmbras' in the lyric when for many years it was my mistake to have put 'Blaydon' in there.  Soooooo....WHAY YER WAITING FOR?? Lets rock!

Avalon (for a while we were 'caught in the act')  rehearsed in the front room of 10 Audley Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. It was a large bedroom and John the drummer sat behind the bed that was put on its side and half folded, like an L shape when looking from above. 10 months together before we split. Avalon 2 continued for over a year.

Spoken:- In the mid nineteen seventies north east pub rock band Avalon played to audiences of any number you could care to name. (as long as it was a number between five and forty five that is!) We did about 20 gigs before disbanding. Rock on boys. Rock on.

  When I thought we’d make it, and we sung our song, Johnny played drums and his beat goes on. Leo played bass and so did I.                                                     Tony sung a storm up and Paddys guitar would cry, cry, cry.    (LET ME HEAR IT CRY).

 Vampires in the graveyard, a hobo on the road,                 
A club in the toon and a blue eyed girl.  We did all these and then some more. Covers like Dylans ‘knock on heavens door’.

 Johns an educator, Leos days are done,                          
 I’m retired but Paddy rocks on.  And what about Tony, where’s he gone?                                  Hope he’s alright and he still sings our song, our song, Avalon.

Spoken:- Are you sure it’s not ‘Brown Sugar’ next? I was sure it was ‘Brown Sugar’.
It damages our rock n roll credentials if we do stuff like’ In the arms of Mary’.
It wasn’t me who was out of tune!
What is King Arthur to do with rock and roll?
I could swear it was ‘Brown Sugar’ next. Couldn’t you?

 Rehearsed in a bedroom down Audley Rd,  maybe one day we would record. Crank up the volume, gave it our all.  Sold our soul to rock n roll!

I wrote this piece in the mindset of a person of power... an heroic superhero. Think of Captain America, Thor, Wonder Woman...a soundtrack that could accompany a battle scene in the movie.

Perhaps if you like anything you hear on one of Roys sites put in an appropriate comment such as 'Roy couldn't hit a barn door with his piano keyboard, even if he could lift it to throw the dashed thing!'

Bass player in Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprouts first real band 'AVALON' (er.... that is his first band to have a drummer AND a P.A.) although when he joined we were called 'CAUGHT IN THE ACT' so its not really true that 'AVALON' was his first anything!! Gawd! Aint life complicated? This name change occured after a handful of gigs. 'CAUGHT IN THE ACT' were Tony Coyle, John the drummer, Leo McCabe, Paddy, and me. All made contributions of a greater/lesser extent to songwriting. 10 months together and then Tony, Paddy and Leo were all gone and new talents came in. Pete Archbold and Paul Dean made us a twin lead guitar band for a time and Steve Daggett replaced PMc as lead singer, songwriter. He played a mean flying 'V' guitar. This Avalon Mk 2 lasted a year. Then I went back to collecting stamps and saving empty milk cartons. (anyone got a spare 1856 British Guiana One-Cent Magenta I could have? ps if u want to collect milk cartons make sure u wash em thoroughly before cluttering the place up with em)
