Originally from Zottegem in Belgium, Steven Petit is widely regarded as a main player in the Belgian scene for his DJ sets, live shows, and productions. Having grown up in a small town, Petit unsurprisingly moved to one of Belgium’s cultural capitals : Ghent, where he created much of what he is known for today.

A singular, rooted sound has amassed a very impressive back catalog with releases on Token, SK-X, Key Vinyl, and many others including his own Border One Records. Sophisticated in design and effective in practice, these records have given Petit a reputation as a sure shot artist to play in clubs. Minimal elements take space in his cuts and are smeared out to ensure tense blends perfect for mixes, explaining why his tracks have been played by some of the world’s greatest artists in the genre and by himself in his new base Brussels.

‘This kind of techno I am talking about points inwards’ says Frederic Lindemann about the sound he’s looking to produce. Listen to everything he’s done since his days as a music student and you’ll get a clue as to what he means. With a heavy focus on minutiae and exploration rather than mass-produced hooks, he’s a vehement exponent for the ’soul inherent in the machines’. His purist repetition and gradual modulation are the hallmarks of a stripped-down philosophy and body of work, a kind of sonic Occam’s razor. To see this method in action, just look to Bassiani Podcast 131. This one packs a punch: hyperactive, ruthless and gnarly, Desroi techno in full force.

Perhaps best-loved for his dynamic take on techno in both his productions and his DJ sets — having been involved and around music for nearly 30 years, @DVS1 is an expert in his field, a true veteran of the scene whose roots extend beyond DJing into grassroots raves and event promotion in his native Minneapolis. 

These days, he continues to push his own limits, getting involved in and starting up projects that fuel his love of music, but also his love of the community he was raised in and helped build. His most recent venture, Aslice, is a software-based platform which proposes a fairer music ecoysystem for DJs and promoters is in its early days, but its concept is bringing up questions for both me and Zak. 

For episode 47, we're exploring the value of art, the definition of success, his own personal perceptions of his worth as an artist.

Operating out of Berlin, French DJ and producer Léo Naïtaïssa, alias Quelza, counts as one of the most satisfyingly mature young guns to emerge out the new wave of techno artists that’s been unfurling in recent times. After a couple iterations on the likes of K S R and Hayes, Quelza recently joined the MORD fold with an exquisitely panoramic view into his mental multiverse. Championing layered techno wares laced with a breaksy, IDM-informed touch that packs a punch, the Frenchman keeps on carving out a truly distinctive, shape-shifting signature, switching scopes and angles as he ups the rhythmic pressure with every next sequence. This man hardly needs an introduction. Jeroen Search embodies a clear and honest interpretation of techno music. Known for his genre defning inimitable sound and energetic performances as well as truly inspirational live-sets, he has always kept himself at the very edge of contemporary techno. Consistently releasing high quality music since the mid- nineties, Jeroen is always right at the sharp end of the techno-spectrum. This can be found in his releases on his own imprint Search, as well as on labels such as Axis, Token, KEY vinyl, and Figure, to name a few. While continually evolving, his music always remains true to that typical Search-sound. In 2021 Jeroen contributed music for a conceptual modern dance project for the famous Pinacoteca Museum in São Paulo, Brasil. He also took part in a theater show working with a choreographer, dancers and an video artist, performing his liveset combined with modern dance and visuals.

EPM Podcast 159 is a totally upfront new techno mix from Token Records’ head man, Kr!z. Led by deeply hypnotic grooves, syncopated rhythms and reverberating atmospheres, his DJ style teases the collective, driving minimal beats into a heady cauldron of volcanic funk. Bringing together such electronic luminaries as Marcelo Antonio, Altinbas & Cirkle, Oscar Mulero, Robert Hood, The Advent, Mike Parker, Norbak, Border One, Isabel Soto and several of his new studio productions (including the soon to be released ‘Atlantis’), Kr!z shows us why both he and Token have been at the forefront of techno for the last 15 years.   

After making a name for himself as a skilled DJ with sharp focus and a quick mixing style in home country Belgium and the Netherlands, Kr!z launched Token Records in 2007. It has since been a leading outlet for heady, purist sounds. He rapidly established the label as a fixed value with a timeless and powerful sound and took it around the world with label nights on every continent. Token remains important in defining techno today - always straightforward, sometimes weird, often catchy – all under the helm of Kr!z as avid A&R.

After 12 years spent assiduously focused on curating the Token discography, showcasing artists he has nurtured and supported over this time, and incorporating the connoisseur’s knowledge and experience he has cultivated in his work as a DJ, 2019 saw the release of his long-awaited debut EP on Token. ‘Mantra’ received high acclaim by both media and the scene's key DJ’s. This continued in 2020, when he released the track ‘Scorpion’s Tail’ on Voltage Imprint and ‘Malice’ & ‘Imperative Needs’ as part of a split EP with Pfirter on his MindTrip label. 2022 will be his most prolific year to date with three full EPs seeing the light of day: ‘Neutrino EP’ on James Ruskin’s Blueprint Records, ‘The Tunnel’ on Setaoc Mass’ hotshot SK_eleven and a third one on his own Token Records.

Kr!z’s new EP ‘Atlantis’ is released 25 November on Token.
