Mareena, a DJ and producer from Berlin who developed a deep connection with electronic music during her teenage years already mainly through youth club culture and underground parties of the post-communist era in East Germany. Moving to Berlin in 2004, she began DJing and immersed herself in the city's vibrant nightlife, drawing inspiration from dub techno and early 2000s techno productions. Her dynamic, non-linear beats earned her a residency at Tresor since 2012.

Mareena has performed at renowned clubs like Berghain, De School, and international events. In addition to her club sets, she excels in the ambient genre, founding the UNRUSH event series, podcast, and label in 2016, focusing on ambient music as a counterpoint to today's fast-paced society.

She has released music on labels like Muzan Editions, Tresor, and her own imprint, Unrush. Mareena's credibility and daring style have made her a key figure in contemporary electronic music culture.

Bassiani Podcast 221's next in line and this one comes from Georgian firebrand Charch. Tbilisi’s his hometown, and the place whose steep ascent as mecca for electronic culture in the early 2010s provided the right conditions for his musical passions to flourish. These days, he’s based in Tallinn, and he’s brought his bottomless hunger for records to the local scene there, with the founding of his own record store Biit Me Riga in neighbouring Latvia a much beloved addition to the neighbourhood. It’s proven a trusty vessel by which he’s able to discover new sounds, connect to fellow vinyl heads and build a community around him, the kind of grassroots mission on which the very best of electronic music culture is founded. From a quirky fusion of 90s progressive house, techno, trance, breakbeat, bleep and house comes his hallmark sound, one that’s also found a home (or residency to be more precise) at Tallinn night club HALL. Building selections from an eclectic range of finds, and with a good vibe approach that puts fun and danceable rhythms to the fore is Charch’s raison d’être. This latest one pushes that vision further, upbeat and brimming with his contagious and singular energy, radically optimistic beats from the Baltic corner of the map he calls home.

Detroit pioneer DJ Godfather turns up the heat for Bassiani Podcast 227. With a story tightly bound to the Motor City and its well-known raft of techno talent, Brian Jeffries’ music is heavily reliant on the midwestern cannon, less orthodox is his personal path within that movement. He’s a key proponent of ghettotech, booty bass and all-round expletive-ridden mischief. It’s fun, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and has proven a vehicle for a wider spectrum of influences. It was during his earliest years that he discovered his method after all, repetitive techno with a few salacious bangers thrown in. After decades at the helm of this musical ship he’s as fresh and in demand as ever, five track EP ‘Oh No’ is just out and brimming with the same bouncy rhythms he’s been putting out for decades. Take any of his many bookings, he’s known to play 60-70 records in the course of a one hour set; that should give some indication as to the tempo and energy he’s working with. Surprisingly, his debut album didn’t surface until 2020, less surprisingly, it was 44 tracks long and titled Electro Beats for Freaks. Keeping up? This latest instalment is an hour of highly caffeinated and unapologetic beats recorded live at Horoom, cheeky vinyl scratching mayhem from one of the Motor City’s most notable talents. Now let’s see that footwork.

Bassiani invites Dj Godfather / Podcast #227

Multidisciplinary artist and queer agitator Valley Dolly is a long time friend and light designer to Bassiani as well as a member of the locally-based Hydrash collective. An eager student of the heady nights of New York underground culture, in their sound there’s an undeniable debt to the house music of that time and place, and the many constituent queer and trans faces that lit the way for so many who came after. By extension Valley Dolly, who also works under the alias Svecki*, uses their skills and context to probe contemporary inequalities, question gender paradigms and deliver a radical critique of the same in the form of perky and silver-toned beats. Their work also alludes to a wider palette of personal inspirations, everything from the quotidian rituals of Tbilisi life to video games and horror films. All of it comes together in a bespoke and brightly coloured house sound that radiates joy and positivity. Savvy rhythms that bounce along at steady pace, melodies that seduce and blaze a trail from start to closing track with one simple goal set in their sights, sharing that feeling of love and inclusivity. Bassiani Podcast 228 kicks off the heavy burden of patriarchal culture with a wink and a smile and sets its ablaze with equal zeal, an hour of breezy tunes from a cherished member of the Georgian scene, and here's hoping there’ll be many more to come.

Returning to the Podcast for yet another round of Mach 4 techno comes Mala Junta head honcho DJ Tool, a live recording from his clubnight’s Bassiani takeover back in March. The Danish-born, German-based selector and former Fast Forward collaborator is every bit the sound and feel of Copenhagen, the gritty, trance-focused beats that have found a home in the Danish city run through his work like liquid mercury and now have Berlin in their grasp. And for one special night earlier this year, alongside D.Dan and Yazzus, Tbilisi too came under his fevered spell. With a manifest focus on inclusivity, support, friendship, and community, his signature sound is faster than a speeding bullet, one that whips up every ounce of a crowd’s energy and leaves behind the type of excited chatter you hear at the cloakroom at the end of the very best nights. It’s a techno that cuts right through and connects with people in the most visceral way, releasing pent up spirits through ferocious tempos and whirling bass. Bassiani Podcast 230 is unchained, unapologetic and pure DJ Tool throughout, four hours of pyrotechnic force from the Mala Junta firebrand.

Decade of Memories saw some of the biggest names in the field come together to mark 10 years of Bassiani, an apposite mix of talents whose own times at the club have each added their own note to its story. In turbulent times and now more than ever the power of music, dance and community is needed and on October 4th these tried and true talents were just the ticket. Among them, Voiski and Sophie Phare played b2b duties on the Horoom floor, a genius pairing of two sounds who find common ground in their love of the fast and rhythmic. The former a French veteran with over a decade of tales to tell and frequent musical acknowledgement of his Iranian roots, whose ever expanding universe has charted disparate paths in collaboration with names like Heartbeat, Vril, Elliot Litrowski, Wata Igarashi, Crysta Patterson and Hadone (Vrilski, Superski, Wav, Kartel and Voiski & Hadone respectively), with over 200 releases and 20 EPs to his name on labels like Mama Told Ya, L.I.E.S., Dekmantel and Delsin. The latter a Georgian mainstay, previous podcast guest and Bassiani resident whose effervescent and catchy melodies would have a cheetah breaking a sweat. Their double alliance meanders through the ambient and expansive texture of Voiski’s world and the sagacious kitsch of Phare’s own making for a high-powered three-hour set that channels the revolutionary spirit of Tbilisi’s creative scene. With the likes of these two at the helm of the Horoom floor and on good track, the next ten years are sure to promise countless more feelings, encounters and memories. Bassiani Podcast 236 is one such special moment, recorded live here on home turf.
