Kasper Marott’s back with a second bout of electronic mischief for Bassiani Podcast 197. The Copenhagen based selector’s been around for many years and has only improved his knack for rhythms from one to the next, that and his singular aptitude for reading a room and playing to a crowd’s most primal instincts. His releases on Seilscheibenpfeiler, Kulør and his own imprint Axces every bit as catchy as his longer monologues behind decks. A little note on Axces: collective’s a closer descriptor, a group of friends and feedback loop designed to create all manner of wonderful sounds, visual artefacts and memorable parties that includes Marott’s buddies Alfredo92, Popmix, Søren Kinch, A. Waze and Martin Gilleshøj. Back to its co-founder: Marott’s a tried hand whose genre-bending flair is both austere and playful, straddling the binaries that often threaten to typecast aspiring DJs. His airy and saccharine disco a world away from the techno frenzy he manifests for this latest instalment. This is his closing set from the club floor back in December, nine hours of warped loops and general techno frenzy. Pulsating rave from this charismatic Danish phenom.

Returning to the Podcast for yet another round of Mach 4 techno comes Mala Junta head honcho DJ Tool, a live recording from his clubnight’s Bassiani takeover back in March. The Danish-born, German-based selector and former Fast Forward collaborator is every bit the sound and feel of Copenhagen, the gritty, trance-focused beats that have found a home in the Danish city run through his work like liquid mercury and now have Berlin in their grasp. And for one special night earlier this year, alongside D.Dan and Yazzus, Tbilisi too came under his fevered spell. With a manifest focus on inclusivity, support, friendship, and community, his signature sound is faster than a speeding bullet, one that whips up every ounce of a crowd’s energy and leaves behind the type of excited chatter you hear at the cloakroom at the end of the very best nights. It’s a techno that cuts right through and connects with people in the most visceral way, releasing pent up spirits through ferocious tempos and whirling bass. Ahead of Amniote Editions’ 5 year anniversary night at Bassiani on the 6th of December (cancelled due to street protests) comes a very special mix from Munich’s finest, BASHKKA. Derived from the Turkish word for ‘different’ (she has roots there), the name reflects a no f*cks given approach to sound and culture that draws people toward her like moth to flame. From formative days in New York City where she started taking inspiration from its wealth of queer histories, she carved an insubordinate sound that’s crossed the Atlantic and set up shop in her native Germany, where her liberating tunes have found common cause with such venues as Blitz Club, Panorama Bar and Amsterdam’s Raum just a hop and a skip across the border. The aim is to reclaim spaces, assert the existence of marginalised groups (SWANA people like herself for one), amplify their narratives and create moments’ where ‘individual heartbeats merge into one motherbeat’. Further to those activist visions, her debut EP Maktub (2023) was a five-track banger and labour of love that synthesised Kurdish vocal samples with runaway beats. The reference to overlooked perspectives and elusive spark found at the intersection of culture and sound is the driving force, and something that’s felt in the gut when she plays. It’s a much needed energy in turbulent times, a reminder that you can save the world and have fun doing it. For Bassiani Podcast 242, BASHKKA brings her inimitable rhythms to the fore of the counter-cultural struggle: brazen and rave-ready, a two-hour trip to the future, slamming beats from a true icon.

Jorkes and Valley Dolly are cut from similar cloth. The previous Bassiani Podcast guests are known for their bouncy house incursions and involvement in Tbilisi queer collective Hydrash. Jorkes holds that standard high in the DACH Welt, with her founding of Freeride Millenium together with partner Paris Bohm, as well as frequent DJ duties on Munich-based Radio80000 and Stuttgart’s Romantica. In the other corner comes Georgia-based friend and Bassiani light designer Valley Dolly, whose equal penchant for New York’s disco and ballroom era is a point where these two paths cross. Together these queer agitators champion the political vision of LGBTQIA+ inclusion and openness, holding an insubordinate middle finger up to oppression of any kind. These are clubbable tunes with a loving message, communally driven house fantasies that manifest a fierce diva spirit. Sometimes a little fun is truly the best prescription, and this buoyant duo is here to bring it. Bassiani Podcast 249 is a live recording from their New Year’s set at the club back at the end of ’24 and the beginning of this new age, a four-hour b2b set brimming with raunchy vocals and maximal melodies, sisters forever.
